VIRAL LOAD average trend without Medication?
« on: May 28, 2011, 01:30:18 am »
I can't seem to find any information on Viral Load trends without Medication from beginning to end. What does it look like in the average person? I know everyone is different - but I'm trying to decide if I should start meds or not, my viral load dropped fast, CD4s are looking alright without meds.

Initial Infection (within 2 week accuracy) 10,000,000 Viral Load - 450 CD4
3 Weeks Later <400,000 Viral Load - 550 CD4

It was a pretty violent drop, Is this normal? I wanted to start meds right away hearing that new research shows that starting meds earlier is better but now I'm curious to know how low it will go. I've heard of some people can be undetectable without meds.

Any input on viral load without meds?

Your infection is most likely to recent for us to give any adequate advice.  You'll have to do another set of bloods, but yes an initial major drop off occurs as your body responds to the infection.  You most likely do not need to start meds, however some people choose to as soon as infection begins.  I would talk to your doctor at length about the pros and cons of starting medication immediately or waiting to treat.  If you do not think you can be adherent to a medication for the rest of your life I would not start until you are.

Here's "that" graph for a "typical" individual.

There is a wide range of variation from "typical" in how many years any individual can go before developing AIDS and a very small percentage of people can go without drugs at all, but as you can see the viral load typically goes way up and then way down after infection.

How manv years have you been positive?  It is loosely put out there that cd4 >500 is good, but I know one person cd4 is appox 300 and he is negative.  My friend, 23 years old, positive for three years, not taking meds has cd4 330 and vl 4,000 and feels healthy.  But he is afraid, as am I, of the side effects of HIV MEDS.

you might ask the experts on http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/Meds/Q215178.html

but anyone involve in research, or specialist in hiv point of view will be jaded towards taking meds at best.
