my THT interview presentation: your assistance please...
« on: September 26, 2007, 05:12:31 am »
Hi everyone

Some of you who were at amg are already aware that I had applied for a job with the Terrence Higgins Trust where I live as a Wellbeing Services Co-Ordinator for pozzies. Well I now know that I have an interview next Wednesday (yippee!)  ;D

As part of the interview I have to give a presentation entitled 'Indicate what health, treatment and wellbeing issues may be faced by people living with HIV, and describe what you think the key elements of a programme designed to empower individuals to self manage their HIV would be.'

Ive already got a lot of information and ideas and have myself completed their past 'wellbeing' programme, but I wondered if anyone who has got any similar materials whether they would be kind enough to PM me? I figure the more info and ideas I work from the better…

Thanks very much!

Lots of love

No assistance offered here, merely a go get 'em, atta girl, and knock 'em out with your presentation! You've likely mined the internet, if not, do so for some possibly current bells/whistles. Hope you get it.

Again, wishing you all the best on the interview and hope that you get the job.

The thing that I was thinking was about what could be done to help not just the individual but the people around them.  If people are going to be helped with such things as stigma or isolation, getting others involved in their care may be of benefit.  Family and friends and maybe even work colleagues.  For instance, I'm not sure that THT offers counselling/ therapy to individuals, though when I accessed the services, this was all I was offered.

They could also help improve their wesite, which is a mess.  Though that might not go down well.

Best of luck

Hi

Good luck for the interview!

I would just like to add that I dont think enough information is given to people who are newly diagnosed in the UK about what services are available with regards to HIV, whilst I have received first class medical care I didnt really receive much in the way of counselling,  well, except for a short chat with a specialist nurse.

I was pretty much sent home and left to my own devices, this site was a godsend as far as education was concerned !

If there are any specific questions you have that may help with your presentation please feel free to ask.

first of all GOOD LUCK!

second, write what you told me, you know about having to personalize HIV help. For some of us, it is mortgages, jobs, and insurances we have to deal with, for others it is securing a legal place in the country...  the issues are as diverse as the patients and it's time to address people as individuals as opposed to bulking them under 'gay', 'woman' and 'African', although these groups have shared issues. But then I know African poz women who are struggling thru college and working nights and I know those who are struggling just to be able to stay here and get treatment and not be deported. Any issue which is stressful in life in exacberated (sp.) and made worse by HIV, whether looking for relationships, raising kids or paying a mortgage. What you need is a band of people with specialties (vocational counselling, mental councelling, legal rights, etc) to address all these diverse issues from the poz perspective. Also if you have an eating disorder, addictions, depression etc, probabaly get worse by having HIV. You just need to be stronger, need more resources and addressed where you can turn for help. But often you are too bummed to look for them. I feel that my having HIV for instance has made me more of a foriegner and cultureshocked that I would be otherwise so I am not able even to assert my rights to see specialists for the insurance I am paying. Hope I make sense.

Good luck again!

Try the Body (www.thebody.com).  They have a  "Beyond Medications" section that may provide some information.  Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Well, now I know what the others are talking about when they say good luck with the interview.

Sounds like a great and very important area to be presenting.

I'm sure you have all the important areas covered, but I'd just suggest (if not already done) that mental health issues be addressed as an important component when it comes to management and empowerment.

Good luck! Very important suff!

My suggestion runs to the type of presentation and the structure......do you know who your actual audience will be?  small group? 3 or more persons?  large group?    for the smaller groups I would stick to very up close and personal presentation... maybe some type of poster size board with "flip" charts  and a copy of the presentation for each person at the "table....
The rule  to follow is that be sure your main( most important )  points are at the top and bottom of the first page......try to limit the number of points to 4 or 5.....people only remember the first and last one...If "details are asked for have "backup" sheets addressing each of the main points with as many supporting references as you can find ( the more famous the better)   If a "plan " for implementation is requested then ask for a second meeting where a detail plan can be discussed  and in fact turned into a "schedule" conditioned on the job offer....DO NOT GIVE ANY FREE ADVICE....  people do not value what they don't have to commit to.

I am sure you will do a great job...I hope some of what I have said is just a reminder of what you already know...be careful about information overload.....being "too good" can be intimidating to many people......

Best of luck...kick ass

Best of luck with it!

I've never heard of their 'wellbeing programme'. Couldn't see anything on the THT website either (which I agree with carousel is confusing at the best of times). What is it? Is there a web link?

As part of the interview I have to give a presentation entitled 'Indicate what health, treatment and wellbeing issues may be faced by people living with HIV, and describe what you think the key elements of a programme designed to empower individuals to self manage their HIV would be.'

Fascinating topic!  I would be very interested in hearing about what you put together.

When you settle in (because you will get the job), I wonder if you would be willing to brainstorm with me on a somewhat similar project I am working on.  You might find it interesting, too.

I am prepared to beg.

"Good luck" seems redundant at this point, but good luck  ;)

I can't really think of anything that hasn't already been mentioned here or that I know you will already have thought of to be honest.  I would certainly emphasize the importance of counseling especially for the newly infected something I think is a bit of a postcode lottery in the UK.  Apart from that GOOD LUCK! From what I read of the description I think you'd be great at this job.

englishgirl, my advice:
Go back and review pozniceguy's post. He is well-seasoned in instructing presentations and the like. Use to train people to do this kinda stuff.

So it's 8A out here in California.  how did it go?

did you tell them you're a card-holding member of AIDSMEDS?  Did you tell them you've been to SF for the AMG?  Those 2 things alone should qualify you for the job.

hi everyone, thanks so much for your support but i didnt get the job.

i got some really good feedback and tons of encouragement and apparently came a very close second (no jokes about there being only 2 people up for the job please) - which in some ways is even more frustrating than being told i was shit!

the guy seemed genuinely sad that he wasnt offering me the job and was really complimentary and encouraging. im still gonna be talking to him in the next few days about some projects i would like to try to start up as a volunteer and he was very positive about that as well.

i was complimented also on my knowledge - and so i owe all of you on the forums a debt of thanks for that, as without the forums i'd know alot less about the diversity of experiences and opinions. although i know a lot of positive people where i live these forums have given me a really wide breadth of experiences, issues and problems. so thank you for sharing!

thanks again for all your support. please dont respond to this thread so it can sink without trace - im really not up for commiseration at the moment! apologies for not responding individually to your support and PMs, i just feel like i dont want to regurgitate it again, ive already had to re-tell it so many times to so many of my friends that im bored of it now!

on the upside, whoever theyve hired must be really fab if theyre better than me ;) :D and also at least im not gonna have to struggle to survive on thousands less a year (the tht job was £6k less than my current job). oh, and now of course i still have the pleasure of being discriminated at work for my sickness and therefore potentially ending up fighting them in court one day...

lots of love
