Testing Concern
« on: January 30, 2007, 05:50:07 pm »
OK Long story.... About 2 years ago, I started donating Plasma to a blood center. Over that time I donated around 10-12 times without any problems.  In 09/05 they stated that one of my donations came back + for HIV. My last risky encounter had been 7-8 years earlier. I had been tested a few times without problems. That same day I went to a local health clinic and took the Rapid test and tested neg. I went to my doctor a week later and took a blood test that came back neg. as well. My doctor said there was nothing to worry about. Starting in July of 2006 I got a sinus infection that would not go away. Along with the sinus issue I have picked up several other medical problems. I have lost around 20 lbs, I am very fatigued, severe joint pain, lost muscle mass in my arms and legs, hand numbness, enlarged glands all over, and blurred vision. I have been to the doctor several times with no answers. I tested twice again in Aug. for HIV and both came back neg. again. I have also tested for other things like Mono, Lyme Disease , allergy testing ect. but everything comes back normal. I am worried these issues are HIV related. Any other test or suggestions that I should look for??? I have put the weight back on but my forearms and hands are still skinny and my rear end hurts to sit down.  (Lipodystrophy?)  Still have on and off again hand numbness and vision issues.

First off I would venture to say the Dr's are correct on this one.   And false positives are not uncommon. But what HIV tests did they give you?  The symptoms mean nothing in general and cannot be used to diagnose HIV status.

That many negative tests. You don't have an HIV concern. I don't know what you are calling risky or how you answered the questionair, but all I can tell you is that you are negative.

I have been married (and faithful) for almost 8 years. The last encounter with someone other than my wife was two encounters of unprotected sex with 2 female partners 9co-workers) of unknow status 9-10 years ago.  I'm hetro and never used any drugs.

Yep that was risky if you had unprotected vaginal or anal sex with them, but you have had your conclusive negative test that say you are negative so you have nothing to worry about.

Finally, you may not have in mind to have sex again outside your marriage. But IF it does happen make certain that you use a condom for intercourse everytime. That covers you as far as HIV is concerned.

There are of course other STDs out there which can be acquired even if you are wearing a condom, but as far as HIV is concerned condoms do the job very effectively.

And yes, you are HIV negative. Period.

Your doctors office tests are correct.  You are HIV negative.  When you donate blood products, the testing they use is extremely sensitive and will pick up many false positives--that is their way of ensuring the blood supply is safe and that no positives will be allowed to squeak by.  Plus, they never would have told you you were HIV +---they would have told you you had a reactive result and that you needed to go to your doctor to get tested.  You can trust you are HIV negative.  As for your other symptoms, if you are concerned, follow up with your doctor with that.

I wanted to thank everybody for the input.  I'm trying not to stress too much over this.  It's just so many strange things going on for the last 7 months for the doctors not to be able to tell me what's going on.  The Lipodystrophy issue is what what I find strange.  Like I said my weight has come back but my forearms, hands, and hip-buttocks area are still skinny.  I did not even know that the term Lipodystrophy existed until a few days ago.  I 'm just concerned that as I research the topic, HIV keeps poping up and no other disease seems to go with it..  Along with the other issues like blurred vision, hand numbness, joint pain ect. it's just all very strange for these to be happing all at once.

From everything I have gone over in your comments you have repeatedly tested negative long after the unprotected incidents.  So HIV is not the issue even though you have those nagging thoughts in your mind about it.

Fortunately feelings and thoughts are not facts even when our minds say otherwise. You have reliably tested negative for HIV. Period.

Discuss your concerns with your doctor. This is not about HIV. Really.

Just googling your symptoms shows me Legionnaires Disease.  So symptoms mean nothing.  But id get on that Legionnaires Tip, might as well start ruling shit out.  So far we have ruled out:

1. HIV
2. Mono
3. Lyme Disease
4. Allergies
