Can a cold effect HIV Viral Load?

I've been reading conflicting reports on the internet as always!  How about cold sores as well?

Interesting you ask this, manuk, as I'm nursing a terrible one right now! I'm also curious to know the specifics of how common colds impact our VLs and CD4 counts - my understanding is it's not much, but affects each person a little differently (like everything else with this virus).

I do seem to be getting better (yesterday was awful), which makes me feel like my system is doing its job and fighting whatever it is off for now.

I remember my HIV doc saying the common cold does not affect VL. I've read (and she has confirmed) that herpes simplex - the virus responsible for cold sores - can negatively impact on HIV VL. It  For this reason we've agreed that I start a suppressive regime of acyclovir. Not sure, though, if this effect also applies to the oral type of herpes (as opposed to just the genital).

Active herpes (HSV) infection of some kinds is likely to raise viral load.  How much for you? Who knows... Why? Ah, good question.... Is it important? Depends... There is, anyhow, an intimate relationship between HIV/HSV replication.

Good presentation here too: http://www.ihmf.org/library/powerpoint/pp_k8_28.pps

As for the common cold, some modified rhinoviruses have been used in studies to induce HIV neutralization :)
