Finally, an acceptable ritonavir/"Norvir" formulation!
« on: July 30, 2008, 08:39:35 pm »
Within this year, Abbott will submit to the regulatory authorities the new ritonavir (Norvir) formulation in tablets making use of Meltrex technology. This technology allows not to use the oleic acid excipient, cause of dysentery.

The first data on bioequivalence with the present soft capsule formulation will be presented at the XVII International AIDS Conference (Mexico City, 3-8 August 2008).

PS My guess is that this new Meltrex formulation will also remove the need to keep ritonavir/"Norvir" refrigerated (as happened with Kaletra-Meltrex).

The current soft gelatin capsule and the pilot tablet Ritonavir formulation (expected to be filed for approval before the end of this year) proved to be bioequivalent.

Unfortunately, also the adverse event are the same. So, it's only a matter of convenience (but important, 'cause the new tablet formulation does not require refrigeration).
