URGENT -- Need diabetes help
« on: February 21, 2009, 02:42:04 am »
I lam staying in the San Francisco Bay Area Penninsual (Palo Alto Area) and was wondering if anyone know of a preventitive cardiologist who is knowledgeable about treating hiv drug induced diabetes?  I probably need to be on Actos, but my hiv doctor would prefer a specialist to be involved for prescribing the medication.  My Blood sugar was 111 in December and there is nothing more that I can do with exercise or diet to change it.  Blood sugar was 104 in September.

I only found out about the blood sugar problem over a week ago and got into see someone today.  I am not from the area and don't know a lot of folks down here. I need a referral urgently.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was on Actos previously and it helped me.  I went off the drug a year ago because my hiv medications were switched and I started a six drug regimen.

Please help.

I am not in the San Francisco area but suggest that you check with the local ASO for a physician referral.

As to the blood glucose levels you list, 104 in September and 111 in December.  Are these levels after you've eaten (up to two hours), after fasting (more than 8 hours after your last meal) or random?  I ask because that information will give a better sense of what the readings mean. Also, your physical activity  can influence the glucose readings.  The more active you are the better you are able to maintain good glucose levels.

A normal fasting glucose reading is about 70 - 100.  After meals can return a reading up to 140.  Higher readings at either scenario may signal the need for medical intervention (most probably medication).

You may find the following WebMD link helpful:

A physician will be better able to give you more solid information.  Over time, he will also probably order an A1C (an average value of your glucose level readings over at least three months) that should return a value less that 7.0

I hope this information helps.

Take care.
