Title: Wierd symptoms - could I be positive
Post by: Lasse on December 27, 2012, 08:57:42 pm
Dear all.
Mid september I had sexual encounter with a prostitute in Brazil. We used condom, but unfortunately it slipped off while I was inside her. This means of corse that I could be in some risk of infection.

About 5 weeks later I lost my voice and had sore throat for 4-5 days. I had no fever or no other symptoms.

After three more weeks, I got muscle pain and some skeleton pain in lower back and legs.
The leg aches have now lasted for 6 weeks, but are now improving a bit.
The aches comes nd goes and feels like I have been exercising, but I have not.

The last three weeks I have also had sore and somewhat swollen lymph nodes in my neck and sore feeling in my groin. I have not been able to identify any swollen lymph nodes in my groin.

The latest two weeks my face skin have become increasingly red even if I have had no sun exposiur as it is winter here now.

I had a negative HIV test 5 weeks after the risk exposure. However, I have been told that this could be false negative that close to the time of exposure.

Does anyone recognize these symptoms?
Should I worry about HIV infection?
Cold there be other sexually transmitted decieses that I ought to test?

Well, your condom protected you until it slipped off - and the chance of HIV infection from condom slippage is very very low. Can I assume it slipped off after you finished? If so, please remember to hang onto the base when you withdraw next time. Some people stay quite hard for a period of time after sex, others do not.  If my assumption is correct, your odds of transmission are quite, quite low indeed.

Of course, at test at the three month period is considered the gold standard, but I have every faith that you will come through this OK.

And though this is an HIV specific forum, of course there are other STDs you can get - even if you use a condom correctly. Why not get an entire STD panel along with that HIV test and get an across-the-board bill of health? Remember, syphilis shares a three month testing window with HIV.
