Hello - Introduction
« on: July 20, 2023, 10:37:05 pm »
Hi
I thought I would join this forum as it has been such a useful source of information to me over the past few years. I received my diagnosis in 2019, and was at that time understandably quite overwhelmed. It took me a  good six months to refind my balance.  This forum would be a place I would come to in the early days of my diagnosis to read about other  peoples experiences and it greatly assisted me in learning about living with HIV.

I am in my mid 50's and have been and continue to be in relatively good health. I live in Australia in a rural town and I have not shared my positive status with many people. My partner is negative and has been absolutely supportive so I know I am truly blessed to share my life with him not matter what throws up. I have also met other positive people at gatherings that are held by a positive support group  in the city and along with this forum those catch up have made me feel more comfortable in myself about living with HIV.

Anyways I thought it was time to join the forum and post knowing that other people may  find themself in the position I found myself in in 2019. Whilst there was the  initial shock of learning about my status I have learnt that life continues and that living with HIV in the 2020's is not as challenging as it was in the 1990s. I have learnt alot  in these forums so thanks to all who post, your words have at key times been a real tonic and support to me.

Hi Ted.

Glad to hear you have a supportive partner and that the forum have been helpful.
You didn't mention treatment, have you started treatment?

Best, Jim

Hi

I started treatment the day after I received my diagnosis and have not had any issues with adherence luckily, and the virus was undetectable within about three months. My  CD 4/8 cell counts have been fairly steady since being on treatment. Initially getting used to the drugs took a few weeks but it's now part of my daily routine. I could do with eating better and exercising more regularly but that's always been a work in progress...
