Surgery postponed... dental advice needed.
« on: April 27, 2013, 08:21:37 pm »
grrr...

Had to cancel surgery (deviated septum) an hour ago because my front tooth (crown/cap?) just broke off. >:( :(

I had a very old (40 years) cap replaced about a year and a half ago and also BOTH teeth were crowned on each side at the same time that are adjacent to (both sides) to the one that just broke.

The dentist mounted the cap on a 40 year old rotted stump it seems.

I could really use advice on how to handle this with my dentist.

I am not a dentist, but it seems to me that he made a poor decision and it would be helpful to here from anyone here who may have better knowledge in the dentalmania world. ???

Timing sucks!!!

I was all psyched up for the surgery.
Now this. :(

Sorry this really isn't too related to hiv but thought to ask here anyway.

ps- I'm just wondering who to contact to find out if he screwed up in his decision to mount a cap/crown (I really don't know the difference) on a bad foundation so that I would have a professional opinion to back up my thoughts.

cranky and tired. ::)

Hi Mitch , surely you wont have to postpone your surgery too long over a broken tooth ?

Its not unusual for a dentist to place a crown on what little is left of a tooth to work with .
The alternative is an expensive bridge or implant . He may give you a discount on your next bill hopefully .

I'm sure your dentist made an OK decision at the time. Shit happens, Mitchell.

I have a crown that's on a what I would consider a impossibly little piece if tooth and although I had the crown replaced its been holding up for 20 years .

A few years back I broke a tooth in the very back after they did a root canal and before the crown went on , I asked and he refunded my money and pulled the tooth for free .
I wouldn't have blamed him if he hadn't agreed to the refund , it wasn't his fault the tooth broke .

Thanks but I didn't do a great job in describing what was left of the real tooth.
Nothing.
It broke flush to gum line.
The stub is stuck inside the crown.
My guess is that I will need an implant or a bridge. :(
I also had crowns put on the 2 adjacent teeth for cosmetic reasons.
(better color match due to a previous root canal and conformity of the 3 teeth in shape)
A bridge seems like much less hassle and less cost but an implant seems stronger and can take 6 months to heal.
While the dentist was removing the old crown, both he and his assistant said "oh-oh" simultaneously.
It makes me wonder if they might have seen a potential problem and continued on regardless.
Having my mouth worked on prevented me from asking what the "oh-oh" meant at the time but I should have asked when it was possible.
This is why I have my doubts that it was installed properly.
I really don't want to bring it up to him without advice from another dentist.
Maybe it was just shit happening, maybe not.
Not the end of the world.
Just more medical visits and more $$.
The story of my life these days. :( :P

Am I missing something here? Why does a broken tooth necessitate postponing your surgery? Is it just so you can fix what is essentially a cosmetic situation before the surgery? I don't think the surgeon is going to care if you're a bit snaggletoothed. Can't you fix the tooth after the surgery?

Good point Ann.
But, the it sounds like this dental work is going to get pretty involved and my face/nose could be painful for quite awhile after surgery.
I put off fixing my deviated septum for over 40 years so far and still want to get it done ASAP.

I have never used "ask an expert" online until today.
Found out the options are a bridge or implant.

The bridge option would require the extraction of THREE teeth, a likely wait up to 12 weeks before the permanent bridge would be put in at a cost of about $3000.(both adjacent teeth to the missing one are crowns and one of those has had a root canal)

The implant option would require the extraction of what remains of the broken tooth. A temporary tooth (flipper) would be put in for 5-8 months before a permanent crown would be installed.
This is oral surgery and would cost around $4000.

The dentist online says that in his practice, he takes responsibility for 5 years on crowns even if they fail for reasons other than his work.
It will be interesting to see how my dentist handles this.

Btw, he also said if the tooth was in poor condition, the dentist should have put in a post for support.

I spent $3500. 18 months ago on these 3 crowns. >:(

Anyway, my vanity had nothing to do with my decision to postpone the surgery.
It had more to do with wanting to be able to speak and chew ASAP. (priority #1 ASAP)
Sound reasonable and rational?

Poor Mitch , you got the Sylvester the cat lisp now ... whats a couple of extra  S's among friends .

I would investigate or try to make plans to get both done ASAP . You need that sinus surgery if your case is even slightly similar to mine .

LOL Ssshhhweetie!

I agree both need to get done ASAP.
Originally I thought to keep the surgery appointment but Kenny talked me out of it. (it didn't take long)

If I go with the bridge option I think I could have the surgery done sooner than the implant option.
I will have to see what the dentist says.

Horrible timing and it is frustrating to no end.

Pretty good news!

Just came back from the dentist.
He gave me the options and prices ($3400-$4300)!
I then explained that I was talking online to a dentist and quoted him that he takes responsibility for crowns for 5 years. (I think this did it :).)

He chatted nonstop trying to figure out what to do.
Then he left for a few minutes to talk to the receptionist.

Came back and offered to do the bridge for free!
As it turns out, one of the teeth he was going to tie the bridge to has had a root canal.
I didn't want to have to do this all over again from scratch so to be safe I decided to go one more tooth further with the bridge.
The extra crown will be $1200.

Still need to go to the oral surgeon to have what remains of the broken tooth extracted.

Temporary bridge to be put in on Thursday.
Tooth extracted Tuesday.
Permanent bridge to be put in 6-8 weeks.

I am calling today to reschedule my deviated septum surgery for any openings beyond next week. :) :) :)

All of this has been a pain in the butt, but I am so glad I got the info online and had the guts to push the issue.
And thanks you all for your support! :)

Oh...
And he glued my crown in today so I am no longer toofless.

Just going out the door to have my dentist "loosen up" the temporary bridge for oral surgery tomorrow when the phone call came to reschedule my deviated septum surgery.
Now scheduled for June 3rd. :)

Got to the dentist and he tried (pounding and yanking) to loosen up the bridge to no avail. :(
(he had a fear that the surgeon might break it)
If the oral surgeon can't remove it in one piece the dentist will have to "install" another temporary. :(
He did make a duplicate but needed to do a lot of grinding for a proper fit on the original so will need to do it again ::)
Ugh!

All of these doctor visits are draining.
Sorry, just me being a handful again.

I'm having all of my teeth removed for dentures next week so I can be a better hostess to Gentlemen Callers but as a pre-Zappa Valley Girl, born and raised, I am curious about your deviated septum.  Why are you having this surgery?  In some of our circles a deviated septum is an excuse to get a nose job.   8)  Have the best day

OK, didn't think I would ever have to revive this old thread...
Have had 8 dental visits so far for a bridge.
I will save you all from most of the details. Went a few days ago to get the permanent bridge "installed" but the lab screwed it up. Didn't fit. Warped, etc.
Got the temp re-glued in the mean time.
Well, tonight I was eating snow peas and the bridge broke in half. Back to being toothless again. (2 front teeth) (the other half stayed put, thank you!)
I am getting used to this sadly enough. (sorry, no photos please)
Of course it always happens on a Saturday.  >:( :(
nuf said. Grrrr.......

Sorry, needed to vent.

Well, I have gotten my denture and my partial and I am going to ask for an upgrade this year.  There is too much plastic and metal structure inside my mouth so I am asking for an implant supported bridge for upper and lower.

I was looking at Dental Vacations in Cancun where you get a luxury suite and American trained dentists but I can't afford that, I am from L.A. and the border is only 4 hours south.  They have Good Sam Dental in T.J. with border shuttle service.  I am going to ask the dental college for the Mexico prices and a credit line increase to pay for it.  So... Mitch, what about that deviated septum?  do you have a cute little upturned nose?   8)  Have the best day

Yes, stay away from snow peas!
And the use of the word "yank" in a dental thread is pretty ballsy. :o ;D

Deviated septum was fixed. Still have my "original" nose. Not that cute or upturned.
Hoped it would help with my daily chronic headaches but so far it's a no. :(

perhaps the mods can add an emoticon where the front toothies are missing.   :P  Hope this all gets corrected soon.

I was purposely introduced to a nice looking fella yesterday evening.  My cool girlfriend pointed him out to me and said he had been checking me out all evening.  I was like "hell yeah"!

So they walk over and she introduces us and the first thing I noticed was his teeth.  Not just missing them, but rotten ones throughout.  Call me shallow or whatever, that was a complete and I mean complete utter turn off.  He went from a 9 to a 2 in one broad smile.

Deviated septum was fixed. Still have my "original" nose. Not that cute or upturned.
Hoped it would help with my daily chronic headaches but so far it's a no. :(

m.

Oh Mitch,

I am not unhappy with my results but not unlike my Sweet Sixteen Nose Job, (imagine if you will...) both me and Nancy Sinatra wearing GoGo boots at age 15 in West Beverly High, we had to get our noses done and she got a career out of it.

As I got older, I thought I should hang on Sunset with Tommy Lee and darn it Heather Locklear grabbed him up and she had a career.  All I could be was a Nose Job with leaky breast implants working my way down Sunset to West Hollywood while singing... "These Boots are Made For Walkin, and That's just what they'll do, One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you".  Are you ready Boots? Start Walkin!

I am not unhappy with my results...  I answer the door with a beautiful smile when I greet guests and take my teeth out at the dinner table to eat.  My next upgrade will be dental implant supported bridges so I will be able to eat Corn On The Cob.   8)  Have the best day

Michael,
Such a sad tale. :'( (first 2 paragraphs) lol!
So, you can't eat with your teeth in your mouth? Just gum the food? That sounds awful! Not much point to have teeth other than to smile and eat. Did your dentist miss that day in class?
Good luck with your "upgrade"! :)

Not such a sad tale, Nancy Sinatra is really much older than I am, she had already given birth to her two daughters and divorced her second husband when Boots was a hit on AM radio and I was ready to enter high school... But, I can eat with the new teeth and for all my life I had big teeth, much like Julia Roberts but she has a career, so I bought Susan Sarandon's teeth with the layout of the inside of my mouth is completely different but... I have a killer smile   8)  Have the best day

Don't feel bad, Mitch.  I only have top teeth (dentures).  But no one notices because I have such a pronounced overbite.

I had my teeth out in '89, and the lab could never get the bottoms right.  I can eat everything other than like nuts, stuff like that.  So, in my case the lab screwed up just like your unfortunate experience.

Good luck with getting your "look" complete.  Maybe someday I will have lower dentures made.  But it's been so long with just using my top teeth, I may not ever go back.  :P

As long as it works for you Betty. :)
Just can't imagine eating a piece of steak or a tortilla chip. Seems like the gums would get sore. Maybe they "toughen up" with use.
My dad got dentures a few years ago. He tells me they are not comfortable after several attempts to get a better fit. Says he only puts them in to eat and meet.

How many teeth are included in your bridge?  Some of the Mexico dental sites show a permanent bridge being supported with 1 or 2 titanium implants with 3 or 4 for an entire upper or lower.  These things are tight, you can talk without your teeth rattling, you can swallow without your lower plate popping out of place and they say the gums grow into the implant to support permanent crowns.

Dental colleges charge about half of what a private practice dentist charges, they do not charge interest and do extend credit.  I'm gay, I shop and dental is not an exception.

My patents each had false teeth.  I took Mom to the dentist so I must have been at least 16 and Colorado Blvd was big in song (worldwide) from Jan and Dean.  Mom drove a 1962 Fuel injected Corvette and I wanted to cruise because I knew, Guy's Come To Race Her From Miles Around but she gives em a length and she shuts em down.  Mom was in great pain, we went straight home and I never got to race an old lady.

My Mom went the rest of her life with lower dentures that fit so poorly, she could never wear them while my Dad had upper dentures he could not wear, so between my 2 parents, there was 1 full set of teeth.  I come from a strange family.  Speaking of...  This has nothing to do with anything but my brother's third wife had a father in another state and an Uncle who was identical twin.  In separate accidents one had his right arm severed at the shoulder, his twin brother the left arm.   I met them once, sitting together with 4 legs, 2 arms and 2 heads.  On that day, I gave up drugs.

Back to Mitch, you don't sound like you got 8 dental visits worth of work done and even though the bridge was made by the lab and it broke, maybe you should be shopping for new dentist.  Over the past few weeks, I have met many people who wear dentures, it is like a right of passage for maturity and every mature person, including but not limited too the #33 Muni driver who earlier said "been there, done that"   8)  Have the best day

My dad got dentures a few years ago. He tells me they are not comfortable after several attempts to get a better fit. Says he only puts them in to eat and meet.

The upper denture I have fits great.  The dentist called in a specialist from the lab, who told me to bring in a picture when I was in high school showing my teeth.  I did and he made a special denture, with the front (over the teeth) out due to me having such a bad overbite.  The people who know I have false teeth all told me they never would have guessed.  Unfortunately the specialist got a job somewhere else when they tried to get my bottom teeth right.

My gums are often irritated depending on what I eat.  But you are right, they do toughen up over time.  Hearing stories about how other people can't get a good fit in dentures has me thinking I wouldn't try to get used to bottom teeth now.  I was 24 when I had my teeth yanked out (the ones that didn't rot out or got knocked out), so it's been a long time.

I never used to think about how important it is to take care of your teeth.  I guess I never cared.  Just another outcome of poor judgment.  I wish I would have listened to my parents.

Dentures at 24? Wow! Sounds like it is working out well for you for the most part. Too bad the specialist moved on. Guess it doesn't matter as you clearly are able to eat without too many limitations and having no lowers comes as a surprise to those who know you.
Thanks for sharing your experience Betty!  :)
PS- I still hate going to the dentist and doubt that will ever change. :(
Hope to get my permanent bridge in sometime next week.
(4 teeth, including the front 2 Michael.) :)
