Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Is it conclusive enough?

Hi everyone, I'm writing this today because I need some clarification. Anyways, I'm a gay male and I engaged in unprotected sex on 24 December 2011 (due to a lack of judgement at the time) where I was the recipient (i.e. bottom). I went to my local health department and the complete STD/HIV blood test done on 16 March 2012 Friday which would've placed me at the 12th week mark. They said that my results will be available no later than 29 March 2012 Thursday, however, I've been very anxious so I got the OraQuick ADVANCE Rapid/Clearview Complete HIV 1/2 Antibody Test done on 26 March 2012 Monday which would've placed me at the beginning of the 14th week and the test result showed that it was NEGATIVE. Also, I haven't any sexual encounters since my last possible exposure on 24 December 2011, therefore, am I safe in concluding that my result via the Rapid HIV test as being conclusive as I wait for the results of my blood test from the health department? Is there a possibility of the Rapid HIV test as a negative test result at the 14th week mark but the blood test being positive at the 12th week mark? Lastly, I've read on various sites that say you should also get tested 6 months post possible exposure but would this be necessary on my part as I haven't had any sexual partners/encounters since my last possible exposure nor do I currently have a compromised immune system? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Your test is conclusive, you are HIV negative.

Although I haven't received my test results from the blood test via the health department yet, the rapid HIV test is conclusive enough correct? Is there any possibility that the rapid HIV test would report a false negative and my blood test draw ~ 2 weeks earlier would be a true positive? Thanks.

The Rapid is an approved test. I don't see any reason to doubt the validity of your negative result. So I do expect you to continue testing negative when you hear from the Dept of Health.
