Title: AMG 2012 Memorial Service
Post by: phildinftlaudy on July 05, 2012, 10:07:05 am
Hello All:
I think that we had decided that the Memorial Service would be held on Sunday, July 29th.

However, I do not recall a  location for the service being discussed.

I have sent out some emails to contacts I have in DC with various HIV service organizations.

So far, I have gotten responses back from a couple. Their suggestion is to check with

William Penn House:
http://williampennhouse.org/conference_room

or

Another location mentioned was Quakers of DC (http://quakersdc.org/directions) -

Both are very open to LGBT and HIV positive persons - One of the organizations is led by an individual who is HIV+.

Thoughts?

We need to nail down a location expeditiously as the date is quickly approaching.

If anyone has other locations that they would like considered and that they would be able to secure, please feel free to respond.

I have not made contact with either organization - as I wanted to put it out here first to receive feedback.

Also, what time would those attending prefer for the Memorial Service to be held?

Thoughts?

Thanks for your input and any suggestions.

-Phil

Hi All:

I am going to be talking to the Program Coordinator from the William Penn House tomorrow just to see if they can accommodate us on Sunday, July 29th.

I will not make a commitment to them until I receive feedback from you all - if any...

We do have to make a decision fairly quickly - so, please feel free to provide your suggestions, volunteer to look into other venues, or general feedback about the possibility of the William Penn House. From looking at their website, it looks like there may be a small fee for use of the conference room/meeting space.... looks like it may cost $50. If they do require it - I have no problem covering the cost.

The location looks great - the address is 515 E Capital Street SE - so, just down from the Capital Complex. They are located about six short blocks from the Eastern Market Metro station (which is on the blue or orange line - which are the same lines that run to Rosslyn station about 1/10 of a mile from the host hotel - so, no transfers needed!)

I'm fine with either location.  It's not necessarily about the setting as much as it is about the power and intimacy of the service.

The memorial service has become such an important part of AMG, as we all know.

Thanks Phil for taking the lead on this.

Hi All:

Just received a message from a contact that knows the Executive Director with START (Syringe, Treatment, Advocacy, Resources, Treatment) at Westminster - a DC service organization  --- I will be speaking with him tomorrow also regarding a possible venue. They are located within a fairly large Westminster Presbyterian Church in SW DC near the river. About one block from a green line Metro station.....

So, we should have a few options -

Anything in particular anyone want me to ask about?

Thanks for the hard work.  I am fine with any venue.  I barely remember the Seattle venue because the service was so touching (and emotional).

I've gotten in contact with the Deputy Director of The AIDS Institute, the Executive Director of the National Minority AIDS Council, the Social Media Marketing Manager at Metro TeenAIDS, the Director for National Organizing at Housing Works, and the Executive Director of The DC Center. They are all providing information on appropriate venues for the Memorial Service at AMG 2012 in DC.

These are truly some amazing, committed individuals - very grateful for all of the assistance they are providing. Very welcoming - and going the extra mile to help out.

We should know something soon!

I just returned from eight days in Alaska at 3 am this morning, so I have not been able to read these posts until right now.  I am elated that there will be a range of service providers to help us get a site for the service.  I would caution that "six short blocks" from Eastern Metro may be too much for some in our group, particularly in the Washington heat.  I am OK with the site though.  We will, no doubt, be offered some other ones perhaps closer to a Metro stop.

Since it will be Sunday, we may need to look at early afternoon rather than late morning, but again, we will get those parameters from the sites.

I am looking forward to providing a memorable experience.  I have some "new tricks up my sleeve for this year."

Remember I won't be arriving at AMG until early Saturday morning.

Alaska was great..even better than anticipated.  Exhausted now though.  Hopefully I will be "recharged" in a day or so.

Couple of quick questions:

1) How long does the Memorial Service usually last? I want to let those I am in contact with for venues know the amount of time we need.

2) What type of candles will we be using? - as some may want to know and I want to make sure we have permission to use the candles or plan accordingly if we need to use them outside - etc.

3) Do we need any type of microphone, music set up?

Thanks!

Hello Everyone:

We have a venue for the Memorial Service!

I wasn't sure how long the service typically lasts, but they blocked off 2 hours for us.

Detals:

Date: July 29, 2012 (Sunday)
Time: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Venue: William Penn House  (http://www.williampennhouse.org/home)
Location: 515 East Capitol St SE, Washington, DC 20003

Getting to the location via Metro rail:
"Take the Blue or Orange Line to the Eastern Market subway station. The station is on the corner of Pennsylvania Ave SE and 7th St SE.   Cross Penssylvania and walk north on 7th St till you reach East Capitol Street (about six short blocks). Turn left and walk one block pass 6th Street. We are the third house on the left, 515 East Capitol St SE.

If you took the Red Line to Union Station, we are still a short walk. Exit Union Station at the statue of Columbus, cross the street to Delaware Street. Walk on Delaware past the Russell Senate Office Building to the Capitol Plaza on the east side of the Capitol. East Capitol Street is to your left between the Supreme Court and The Library of Congress. Walk east on East capitol 5 blocks and you are at William Penn House."

If the walk is going to be prohibitive to anyone, I'm sure that people would be able to share a taxi to the venue from the Metro (there are typically plenty of taxis available just outside of the Metro stations).

Hey Phil,

I have no problem, with the William Penn House, for the Memorial service.  The only concerns I have, are the lighting of candles within the house.

There may be 60 or more Tea candles burning. We need to check to see if there are restrictions on open flames in this building. We don't want to set off smoke detectors. Some of these detectors can be quite sensitive.

If there is a problem we will need to rethink the candle situation.

I am just not sure they would allow this many candles. Just my thoughts.

EDITED to add, I am not sure how the candle situation, was  handled at previous AMG's. If it was held outside, or inside...

Hi Ray:

I checked with Brad at William Penn House at the time we were discussing the logistics of the event and asked him if lighting of tea candles would be an issue.

He told me that there would be no issue with it.

So, we should be good to go on the candle lighting.   :)

Thanks for bringing this up as it was definitely a valid issue to raise.

I will be relying on Mike (Bocker) to hail me a cab...he's actually really good at that... ;)

There is an actual art to Cab hailing. I learned this when I was in NYC and had like 40 cabs pass me, until a random Newyorker showed me the correct way...Stand in the street (not on curb) scream, or better yet whistle. Also flip off any cabs that pass you up.
