Florida bound
« on: July 26, 2013, 09:28:14 am »
I am going Florida Aug 9-23.  I decided to drive taking 81 up there (or is it down from here?) and 95 back.   Has anyone ever taken 81 from Florida to the east coast?  I've never gone that way.

Any suggestions on places to visit while I am there?  I will be staying in Hudson, but I plan on going to Miami to visit my cousin.  I am also going to someplace called Treasure Island, I'm not sure what it is but mommy said that we are going.  Since i have my car I can go wherever I want to.

I also want to take Grandma away for the day and would like suggestions for a good place to take an elderly person.  Having a grandma/granddaughter day sounds fun but with her Alzheimers and balance problems it sounds kind of scary to.

And finally:  Do the beaches there have boardwalks?

I also plan on job hunting while I am there.

For those who know my sense of directions, I have no plans on getting lost on the drive there or back.  I have my AAA trip tix, and I have a new updated GPS.  (My old one was 8 years old and the dumb thing kept getting me lost).  Although while I am in Florida getting lost does not count  ;).   Apparently my brother and family are taking bets on how lost I get. ;D

I will miss being with everyone in Chicago  :'( ,    but there is next year.

Hey - I've taken 81 from Atlanta to Philly - we stopped in Dollywood in TN which was a hoot and then came back via DC with a stop there. 81 goes on to New Orleans so you would have to switch over to 95 or the Fla Turnpike at some point.

On 95 on the way back you could stop in Savannah or Charleston. I lived in Fort Lauderdale for awhile and have spent a lot of time in West Palm. Florida beaches don't have boardwalks though "The Strip" in Fort Lauderdale and walking along South Beach are just as fun.

Hello Michelle !,

So you're heading south.  We would love to see you..I am still working and am scheduled to be off a
few days in Aug. I am off the the 9th through the 13th  and am off weekends after that - ( Friday and Saturday).

Hudson is  North of us.  We are in Palm Harbor,  maybe 25 miles or less,  south on US HWY 19.  US 19 is the main drag running north/south , through Pasco and Pinellas County, and goes all the way North to northern Florida.

Traffic is hard to judge, maybe half an hour or so to drive south to where we are, from Hudson. ( depending on time of day and traffic)

Treasure Island is south of us  but north of St. Petersburg beach.

Summer here is hot , hot , and humid...be prepared. You may want to remember this when taking your Grandma out.

I'll private message you with my cell number, don't hesitate to call when you get here.

Good luck...looking forward to seeing you again.  Drive carefully.

No boardwalks on the beaches but lots of beach areas to explore between Hudson and St. Pete. Plenty of restaurants to eat at a good price !

Take care of yourself----Ray

Since you're stopping off in Hudson, highway 19 south would and then I-75 south would be the way I would get to Miami.

Ray, would probably be able to give more info on it.  But when I am down there visiting my wife's family I really like Clearwater beach.  I've heard some say it's a bad area, but I never really thought so.

And since you're heading to Miami, there is a boardwalk on Hollywood Beach.  They have really spruced up the area in the last 10 years and it's rather nice.  Personally, I would avoid South Beach all together.

While I am not familiar with Hudson, Florida most of the West Coast of Florida is rather beautiful.

If you are going from Hudson to Miami definitely take Alligator Alley. On one drive i counted over 90 alligators sunning themselves on the sides of the canals. Just dont try to pet them.  ;D  john

Thanx for the tips  :)

Aww why can't I pet the gators? LOL  (yep my family has bets on that to). I will definitely check out alligator alley.  I remember going to an alligator farm to feed gators the last time I was out there, it was fun.

I was wrong it's not Miami it's Hollywood that my cuz lives in, I never knew there was a hollywood Florida.  But I want to check out Miami.

I will probably take Grandma to a mall, we will have to rent a wheelchair for her, but it will be air conditioned and easy to get around.  I want to give mommy and step-daddy a night for just the two of them, it's something they don't get.

Mommy told me to bring good chips, shoo fly pie (the most horrible tasting pie there is ) and Turkey Hill Ice Tea to them, apparently FL. has a poor selection of good chips and ice tea.

Of course I have to check out the beach so I can collect shells and check out the surfers.

Hi Michelle:
I'm about 10 miles from Hollywood...
Skeebs is correct - Hollywood has a great boardwalk (broadwalk) - they have improved it a lot over the last few years - great restaurants, little shops, bars...  I like Ocean Alley...

South Beach is pretty touristy - I don't get there often - though I work just across the bay from it - but they have the roads tore up there right now and getting in and out and parking is a nightmare....

Alligator Alley is a very relaxing drive - with nature all around.. Peaceful, serene and plenty of alligators to see.. You might even pull off and go to the Big Swampee Indian Reservation - they have airboat rides, alligator wrestling, etc.

Some good malls are: Aventura Mall (just a few miles South of Hollywood); Sawgrass Mall (large outlet mall); Pembroke Lakes Mall, Dolphin Mall....

There is also the Swap Shop - large indoor and outdoor - year round flea market - one of the largest in the U.S.  and home to one of the largest drive in theaters with 14 screens - it is in Fort Lauderdale...

Make sure you let me know when you will be in this area and I will make sure to arrange to see you all.....

Safe travels!  Enjoy!
