Just got into the same situation I already described. If the panhandler gets me at the right moment, I'm an easy touch.

So its Saturday and I was working late in my office in another town. Took the 11PM train home. In the station when I arrived, a tall very thin quite raggy young man asked me for 5 francs to get home on the train. I had 1 franc on me, really. So I said I would give it to him. I had to park my bike and find my wallet and I gave it. Then I thought, I might need money myself. So after he split I went to the ATM. Got 100 francs. In Switzerland the machines never spit out small quantities. You ask for 500 francs it spits out 2 200 bills and a 100.  The train machines only take up to 20!  Anyway, leaving the station again, I saw him asking everyone. So I went up to him and said, listen if you have to get home I'll buy you the ticket with my cash card.  We went to the machine and I got a good look at him. Open sores and scabs on his face. Dirty hands and smelly.  Wacked out presence. He told me about visiting his friend in the hospital blah blah blah.  Anyway I said where do you really live and he said this village up in the mountains and I bought him his ticket it was 25 francs!  I first asked him if there was still a train, I'm not sure there really is I think he'll get to the city near his village but probably wont get much further tonight. And the tickets are usually good for the day.  Anyway I cant imagine what else he can do with a ticket to this village so I said hey man, go home and sleep, take care.

Maybe I should have given him 50 francs cash and walked away?

Anyway, maybe it was because I was depressed it was Saturday and nobody asked me out tonight and I didnt get it together to call and make a date with friends so I was feeling lonely and I just couldnt deal with him being also in a far worse situation and not being able to just go home whereever that is.  And its raining, of course.

Lots of young people everywhere in the stations, all prettied up for a night on the town. It was cute. And then I see him and see how marginal he was and just felt like hey he deserves a break.

Maybe I was had.

i hate it when i miss interesting threads

panhandlers? i give them money when i want to. hitch hikers - i pick them up when i have time and we are heading in the right direction. i've never pan handled (my good friend does on a regular basis) and i've hitch hiked. i've been homeless multiple times in my life (my mom used to love kickin me out but never for long periods) - but not technically  homeless.

there was some young white hippy dude who had a sign up in my town. said something to the effect of homeless white guy needs money for beer. l found it amusing and so did most of the cars in front of me. i think he got enough booze for days : )

i don't really care if they spend the money i give them on drugs, alcohol or food. what matters for me is the act of giving when someone believes they are in need or they are in need. i don't understand their situation and the complex series of events that got them to where they are but a dollar wont make or break me.

then my momma always gave money to homeless black people. she used to tell me whenever you see a black person beggin for money give them some cause it's harder for them than for others. i don't know if this is true and im pretty egalitarian in my giving.

all i know for sure is we don't get most places in life alone and i've definitely been givin some handouts along my journey :)

best,
d

p.s. ravhyn - i'm becoming quite an admirer of you
