Higher Education dilemma
« on: November 12, 2009, 04:22:50 pm »
I cannot find any resources to assist with Graduate Level tuition.  My diagnosis threw up a big STOP SIGN to my University's financial aid department.  My job as the Prevention Director for a local ASO was eliminated due to economy and the need to pay for labs with the same flat funding for 7 years and a 300% increase in new clinical clients.  So, now I've been accepted to Grad School to complete my Master of Social Work.  When I was diagnosed I had a small amount of Undergraduate Student Loans and at that time, my cd4 was under 100 and viral load through the roof.  The prognosis was not good and my loans were  insured and my health qualified for the loan to be paid by the federal insurance program.  Now that I have survived so long and already had a federal student loan claim back in 1994, I don't qualify for any financial aid without getting my physician to write a note about my prognosis changing from "terminal to chronically manageable" and I know that there's probably not a physician out there that would do that.  It's ridiculous to me.  All I want to do is to finsh my MSW and provide therapy primarily to people with HIV/AIDS in my area.  The MSW is necessary for billing purposes.  I'm at a loss now  ----  Just like I was when I was given my diagnosis.  If anyone out there knows of any financial aid resources --- please let me know.  My email is:  GLFOWLER1968@yahoo.com

I would advise you to get your doctor to write that letter.  I just finished an undergrad degree, and in order to get student loans (it was a private school)  my doctor had to do it then.  I've also been accepted into a master's level certificate program, and he had to fill out a paper the school gave me in order for me to get a student loan to pay for it (should I choose to go into it).

You need to talk to your doctor, let him know what it is you want to do, and see what he says.

YaKa, I like you, and I'm not trying to be a bitch, but this is the long-term survivor's forum.  Maybe you didn't realize that.
