Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Sex with a sex worker

I was in Asia earlier in May. Got drunk one night and went to a massage parlor. The girl left the room for a minute then came back for the intercourse. I asked for a condom but she told me she had put on a female condom. We argued for a while but I was drunk and it was dark and she got on top of me. I was in her for about 5 seconds. Didnt feel like she had one on. I had no symptoms until 6 weeks later when I got flu-like symptoms. Body aching, really bad sore throat, fever. Then started getting pimple-looking ulcers on my lips and penis. I got an HIV test done and I'm getting the results tomorrow. I'm freaking out.

How ironic. Spent my whole life being so careful about sex, abstaining for the past 2 years waiting to meet a great girl and everything could be going to waste for 5 seconds.

Well, excessive drinking is pretty much never a good idea and with casual sex definitely not a good idea.

However, there are several things to note. None of your symptoms are HIV specific and in general neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything accurately about your HIV status. If there has been a true risky, i.e. unprotected intercourse, (vaginal or anal), then an Elisa test at 13 weeks is what you need to do.

HIV is not easy to transmit. It's significantly harder to accomplish from female to male. You had a single, brief and possibly unprotected incident. The odds are very much in your favor that you're going to test negative. Assuming you get a 6 weeks negative, then re-test at 13 weeks to confirm the earlier result. A negative at 6 weeks is extremely unlikely to change to positive at 13 weeks, but do the second test just to be sure.

If your symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor.

My test came back negative. I'll do another one at the 3 month mark just to be sure. I will get tested for Herpes because my doctor hadn't included that test but I'm assuming that's what it is (didn't think I would get so happy about getting Herpes one day ;D)

I want to thank you for your reply and your site that contains a wealth of information. I have made a donation to amfAR and I truly hope that one day we will find a way to beat this terrible disease. In the meantime, I wish the best of health and courage to those that have been infected...

Thanks for your good wishes. Good luck re the herpes test.

Just remember that as long as you always without exception use condoms for vaginal and anal intercourse you will be well protected as far as HIV is concerned. It doesn't matter whether  you are with a professional or a civilian. Condoms are the thing that make the difference.

Avoiding excessive drinking is also a good idea.
