AMG Fashion Alert!!
« on: July 22, 2007, 08:40:47 pm »
Hi All,

As I was walking home the other day, in 70 degree weather with a STIFF sea breeze, and I was freezing to death, it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to give some wardrobe tips for surviving SF weather.  I offer this fashion advice because most of my POZ friends have had the same experience, and these tips have worked for them (and for me).

Because we are right on the Northern Pacific, SF can get downright cold even when the thermometer reads something relatively warm.  We generally get a fog layer in the early afternoon (together with the STIFF breeze I mentioned earlier).  There can also be a fog layer in the morning.  These are not to be taken lightly.  I have had numerous nights and mornings (more than I care to remember) when I arrived home after a night of debauchery feeling like a frozen dairy treat, just because I didn't dress correctly.   (In other words, a simple harness will NOT work).

So, the secret is:  LAYERS!!  This means a t-shirt, topped with a long-sleeved shirt, topped with a light jacket.  Avoid shorts, even though it is California.  As the day progresses and the temperature warms up, you can strip off, and when it gets cold again (and it always does) you can get dressed again.

This will be especially important on the day we go the the AIDS Memorial Grove, as Golden Gate Park is close to the ocean, and the fog layer burns off a little later there.  You will want to be comfortable.

This is as far as my fashion tips can go, since fabric and color are foreign concepts to me.

I am SO looking forward to seeing everyone.  Less than two months to go now!!!

I can "ditto" that...my last two trips to SF were in the late summer and early fall and in both cases..it felt pretty nippy!  Layers are definitely in order.

I agree, everytime i've been in SF in september i've seen tourists freezing their ass off. Layers is the best idea, because it can actually be freaking hot during the day. SF can have indian summers that can be hot but i've never experienced a hot night after 8, so bring your sweaters!

Of course many of us will be very familiar with the concept of "peeling off" whenever the need arises!  My goodness...my mind is in the gutter tonight (unfortunately the rest of me is on boring old solid ground!)

Goodness, I don't know what to pack now!

t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, long pants, a jacket (do I really have to pack a jacket for cripe sake?) and shorts?, I don't own a harness though!   :(

Is this too much?

Everything I'm bringing will fit into a small carry-on backpack. Miss Melia travels light...and doesn't like waiting for luggage unless it's absolutely unavoidable.

Thanks for the info. Why do I have this feeling I am going to pack too much now???

Dan
(who will probably bring way too many clothes)

I quess I will go with the old standby Levis, long sleeve shirts & undershirts & leave the shorts/short sleeve shirts @ home.

Are we there yet?

I feel the anxiety building as the gathering gets closer.

In a word, yes.

But pack it anyway.  It could liven up the party, and you will certainly get noticed!!  Even in SF.

BTW is that really you, RAB?  We still haven't seen the pix.
