2:30 am and my cat is really sick
« on: July 14, 2006, 02:39:39 am »
She is not eating and drinking and her stomach seems swollen. The vet does not open to eight am.Yes we have a 24 hour vet here. I called and they want five hundred dollars up front just to look at her.

I have a good job that pays well but l do not have the kind of cash laying around. My vet at least will work with me.

She does not seem to be in any pain she is just looking at me with her big eyes saying "make it better".

Going to be a long night .....I just want her to be ok.

I know how you feel.  I have 5 cats and have had to use the 24-hour vet a couple of times.  Is there another one you can try?  Here, they don't charge anything up front, but the minimum cost is around $90 or so.  Maybe she's just got a stomach virus thing that'll pass.  I hope she gets well soon!

I just came home from the vet. After a morning of tests he came out and said to me she had cancer in her stomach.

It would have been over four grand to treat her and he said she might not have made it through treatment.

So with a very sad and heavy heart l had her put down.

I feel like crap for doing it.

Her daughter my other cat is here looking for her.Think l am going to get her a can of tuna and a rum and coke for me.

I am sorry to hear about your loss.  I know what it's like as I had to put my 21 year old buddy, Rudy to sleep a few years back.  I do know this though... she'll be back in your dreams for years to come!

I just had to add (as I chuckle)...

I even call my new cats by the name of Rudy from time to time.  Be glad she's been able to share her life with you.

I am sorry that things turned out badly. Its obvious that you loved your cat and did all you could. She must have felt great love and comfort from you, especially at the end.

I'm really sorry to hear about your cat.  I went through that twice... due to an ass hole neighbor who liked to give animals anti-freeze.  I'm amazed at how attached we get to our pets.  I also had to play with my kitties after I read your post.  Take care.

I am very sorry you and your Cat had to go through this. I have too many animals as it is and it's horrible when something happens. You must be feeling pretty crappy but you will get through this. I'm sure your other critters will enjoy that can of tuna.

By the way, for what its worth, I really DO know the horror of those endless nights with a sick pet. I lost two ferrets between midnight and dawn.  It's one of the worst feelings you can have as a pet owner, to be able to offer nothing but comfort, not even relief from pain. It's frustrating and enraging... I also remember the impossibility of the 24 hour animal hospitals for people on any sort of budget. Times like that, you feel all alone, abandoned, millions of miles and hours and hours from a single soul who cares.

For what it's worth, I know that feeling, and I care. You seriously did the best you could.

Jonathan i read your posts on Ringo and l cried through them.

My thought is Ringo and my baby are together some where waiting for us.

And don"t get me started on 24 hour clinics right now.....GRRRR

Ya know, I don't believe in much. And what few beliefs I have, I tend to keep really personal. But I do believe in the Rainbow Bridge. Not because it's logical or rational, but because it sometimes keeps me going through the darkest times.

I want to believe that somewhere, the creatures we were lucky enough to care take are waiting for us, somewhere in the ephemera between our limited existence and what comes after. And that maybe that love endures.

Because if love doesn't endure, then it's hardly worth the heartbreak. And the notion of conservation of energy makes me believe that there are things that do indeed endure, and that the things we so strongly feel, the things we put out into the universe, meet us halfway when we are on our own way home.

Blue,

I am sorry you lost your little loved one.....but I truly believe you showed one of the bravest acts of kindness on earth, allowing a sick pet to end its suffering.
I was not so brave when my 11 yr old schnauzer was gravely ill, and she died at the emergency vet clinic, because I was not strong enough to let her go.

The dog truly saved my life, and I honestly don't think I would be here today if it were not for that little angel disguised as a miniature schnauzer.   Every I.V. drug infusion I took, every home nursing visit, every home pentamidine treatment, she 'took it' right along with me.

Of course she is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge.  I couldn't go another day if I didn't believe that.

With love and sorrow,

Alan
