I'm going to have my doctors appointment on the 24 and i will ask my doctor and keep you all post, hopholly is nothing but never had a dry skin before, will see. I have been having similar problems with my hands these past few dry, cold winter months - although I'm not on meds so I know it can't be that. My assumption is that, because I wash my hands a lot to make sure I am not picking up germs or infections, I'm depleting my skin of all its moisture. This on top of it being very dry winter air here in D.C.

Lotion (which I hate putting on, because I feel like a chick and can't open doors with it on my hands) does not seem to help much. But I've always had sensative skin, so... If anyone recommends a brand that they use, please do share.

Hey Chaplin, I'm in the area too in VA like I say before I never had problems with dry skin, thats why I'm concern. About a good hand lotion is always good the ones who have parafine on it.

I'm on Atripila... but, I think your problem maybe exaggerated by the warm/cold change along with the medication... take an aveno bath... it should sooth and help and also exfoliate your skin by lightly scrubbing with a pad or wash cloth made for this purpose... your doctor will probally tell you its winter itch... oh and after your bath or shower be sure to rinse in cool if not cold water...closes the pores... why do you think theres sooooooooo much dust in the world from people shedding skin etc... and god knows what else... good luck...

I had dry skin every since High School.  Also I live in the high Nevada desert too.

I use Vaseline Intensive Care Total Moisture Skin Lotion and it works good. Another thing is a (Natural) Vitamin E Capsule helps too.

Whether I was living in NY or MA, I always got dry skin, connected or not to meds., the heat inside, the cold outside.  I use Banana Republic lotion on arms and back and Keri Lotion religiously on hands before bedtime.  You may find, either from other posters or in the information inserts, side effects from your meds. to factor in as well.  Try to take shorter showers (if you take them over baths) in less than hot, hot water since long, hot showers, while sounding great in Winter, dry the skin.  Win

When I took Accutane (ooooh... that was a fun course of treatment), I was addicted to the Lubriderm for Extra Dry Skin.  It was brilliant... and not scented, so it wasn't irritating in the slightest.

Why don't you do a poll with people taking the same meds.  It could ask about the know side effects plus your dry skin issue and you can see if it is a condition of the meds.

My skin really changed when I started having lots of digestive problems due to HIV. The health of the skin is often one of the indicators tha something is terribly wrong. I used to have nice soft skin. Now it is dry and thin. I have not noticed my skin become any drier since I started meds a week ago.

Javier,
My dermatologist recommended Cetaphil Lotion.  It use it everyday and have had great results.  I put it on as soon as I get out of the shower since the moisture is still on my skin and it seems to absorb better.  Also as Poet stated, hot showers also dry you up like a raisin.

One last thing is drink plenty of water.  I find this helps with dry skin.

Cheers.

I think my dryness of skin prolly originated from not drinking enough water but is also diabetic which I'm sure is another factor. I use Lubriderm Advanced Therapy it helps for everything but my dry heels but  I may need a pumice stone for that.

Javicho, what you're describing sounds like something med related.  Typically, Winter dryness doesn't effect the palms of your hands, and it would be awfully coincidentaql that you've never had this issue until you went on Atripla.   Is your dermatologist aware of the "Sustiva rash"?  I'm sure you've had stress before and never had bubbles on your hands.  Until you can see your specialist you may want to use a humidifier in your room at night to help with dryness.  You can also boil a large pan of water on your stove for the rest of the house.  If it's not bad enough to be a problem it's probably nothing to worry about.  Lots of us get the rash but much fewer have to worry about it.  It will most likely pass but is still something to bring to the attention of a ID Dr.

Kindest reguards,

brother joe
If there's a cure I hope I can have all the leftover Sustiva.

I'm also VERY big on Derma E - Glycolic Facial Cleanser.  It's the only thing that removes flaky skin build up and leaves you smooth and ready for moisturizer.  It's quite hard to find though so I have to order it from Amazon.com all the time.  In fact, I just ordered two bottles last week.

Someone who was more experienced with HIV recommended it to me about 5 years ago (may he rest in peace now) and it really worked better than any medication ever did, though at times Metrogel can do OK but that's not good long term as it's got a steroid element in it.

I use Keri lotion, unscented. It works well on most of the body.

I also have used a special foot treatment because my feet will become so dry they crack and bleed. It is mainly oil of some sort and salt, but there are other things in there, most I can't recall or pronounce.

The hands are another problem because I wash them so often. A good hand cream with vitamin E seems to work.

HUGS,

Mark

yeah, the skin on my soles is starting to get really dry, though not as bad as yours.  I used to have the smoothest skin on my feet too.  I need to start moisturizing them more.  I also own a foot bath thingie that heats up the water but I never use it.

Oh... and since I'm uber-gay I use Clarins special eye lid moisturizer.

Mark, my solution for my hands, since I was doing massage, was to squirt Keri lotion into them last thing.  Of course this started with the old version which took hours to soak in.  But it would stop the cracked/splitting finger tips.  Oils used during sessions did nothing to help. :( Win
