Going away for 3 months..
« on: August 29, 2007, 11:32:18 pm »
So my boss told me yesterday that I should pack my bags and go on a business trip this weekend. I'll be in NYC for 1 week and then off to India for 3 months or so.. This will be my first time going to India after my diagnosis and I'm actually scared. Everytime I've visited back home to India, I fall sick ! Last time I was in Bombay in 2004, I got Malaria !

I saw my doctor today and he gave me medication for the following:

1) Traveller's diarohhea
2) Doxycyclin for Malaria 1-a-day
3) Typhoid shot (that I've to take tomorrow)
4) Zithromycin Z-pack in case of any respiratory infection.

Do you guys think this is enough or should I take any other vaccination / medication? I already have taken Hep A & B shots.

And most of the doctors in India are HIV ignorant, Do you think if it's a wise idea to disclose my status in case I fall sick there?

I'm also going for my quarterly blood work tomorrow.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi, i am not sure about the amounts of meds and stuff like that, but as for what refers to disclosure in case you feel sick i think you should do it.

I have read there is a big amount of poz patients in India so perhaps Drs are a bit more aware of the facts of the disease nowadays. Plus it would be good idea for you to look for some info regarding health care facilities that are poz friendly in the city/cities you will be staying. There should be something about it online. Just in case.

Wish you the best in India :)

Good morning... your present doctor should be able to check through the network of physicians in India that are HIV knowledgeable. Also when traveling overseas... you need to take many precautions... such as food you eat, what you drink etc... I've been to India... why not check online to see about facilities etc...
