Hello everyone,
I am new to the site and I would very much appreciate any advice or guidance anyone could provide with my situation. I am a 23 year old gay male. I rarely practice anal sex, and when I do, I make it a point to always use condoms. I tested HIV negative 7 months ago.

About 7 weeks ago I went home with a man whose HIV status I do not know. Condoms were not available to us, so I refused to participate in anal sex. We engaged in brief mutual oral sex; and dry humping and "frottaging," where I was the top. During the frottaging, to my regret, I did feel the very tip and head of my penis enter into his anus; when I realized this, I immediately backed away. This moment could not have been more than 1-2 seconds. I decided to leave soon after that.

I tried to forget about this incident, but about 2 and half weeks later I got cold symptoms with nasal congestion and headache which lasted for about 5 days. Also, a few days into my cold, I had abnormally high temperature of about 99.3-99.4 (not quite a fever, I know, but still higher than my regular temp). That temp lasted for a little less than a day after taking some Advil.

I've had some friends tell me I'm needlessly worrying about this incident, but I'm especially anxious after going through that cold (it seems like the right time frame for Acute HIV symptoms). I am frightened as this is truly the first potentially risky situation I've put myself in (and I hope the last!).

I am worried, and am hoping that this is not a high risk situation. If anyone has any advice out there, I would truly appreciate it.

Much thanks

Worried, even as I appreciate your concern, I think you're worrying needlessly. You had single and very brief insertion which hardly even qualifies as a genuine insertion. There is absolutely nothing HIV-specific about any of your symptoms. As the insertive partner you would have been at markedly less risk than the receptive partner.

There's a simple solution to your concern: get tested. At 7 weeks you can get an initial test done now. All but the smallest number of those who are going to test positive will seroconvert by within 4-6 weeks after a risk. I feel confident you will test negative. You can re-test again at 13 weeks for a final result and again, I would expect your result to be negative.

It's good to read that you're committed to using condoms consistently for intercourse. Way to go!
