Can we have an Under 30 forum?

Everyone else is getting one... and I think that those of us who are poz and under 30 face unique issues... like school, just starting to work and stuff like that.

Oh no.

I think that yes, under 30s have unique issues. But those you've listed aren't very linked to having HIV are they? And in the places that they are (discrimination at work, etc) they'd surely apply to all members.

I'd really hate to see this place fracture down a line defined by age. It seems to just formalise the oldie/newbie divide. I understand the LTSs getting their own forum, as it's HIV related. I remain ambivilant as to how that's going to pan out.

I'd submit that the "Off Topic" forum seems to be dominated by under 30s.

I think all of us have unique issues. I am 43 and face the same types of things that an under 30 person would.

I think pigeonholeing each and every age group will not allow the free-flow of ideas from all age groups.

Just my 2 cents.

NO!  You may not.  If so, will there be a forum for Under 21? That would be 18-21, according to the rules of engagement.

This isn't Logan's Run.  We don't get a special crystal for our involvement.

I don't fit in anywhere, story of my life.  PM me for more details.

I'm not keen on a new forum that might exclude people of any age who are just restarting their careers, or starting a new one, with a recent diagnosis or one many years old. Would you not benefit from their advice, whether they were 29 or 39?  or 69???

School and starting to work are not age-limited efforts. And I know about a lot of stuff.

No... but those of us who are a wee bit younger tend to have more financial instability, more wildly flucuating relationship patterns, and are more likely to still be figuring out who we are and all that.  These things are all made much, much, much more difficult when you're poz.  Believe me.  They are.

Erickson puts us in terms of human development in the task of intimacy vs. isolation stage, and HIV compounds and complicated... it might be nice.

But I think the reactions have been interesting.

You would think so wouldn't you? However, experience continues to teach me that for many, regardless of age, the issues you mention above are quite simply ongoing life challenges.

These things are all made much, much, much more difficult when you're poz.  Believe me.  They are.

I think you will find a pretty unanimous vote on this last statement.

Benj, as a 35-year-old, I personally think that the issues you have brought up are not unique to under 30 year olds and are also not always more difficult for you young ones to navigate. I actually think that fear and insecurities about starting something new (like studies, new employment or a relationship) can often increase with age. Not always but often.

I propose there is much more to be gained for everyone of all age groups by sharing our experiences about such stuff together here in LW or in OT. Especially the 'figuring out who we are' stuff.

Although Chicken Chat is cute! :D

Just one more petite response to:

But a Long Term Survivor forum is OK?

I'm not understanding the distinction.

The LTS forum is for everyone to participate and learn from, not just the LTS folk. But it also provides a safe place for LTSs to raise issues related to their common experiences as LTSs. Plus it provides a safe place for LTSs to discuss issues specifically related to the latter part of the journey with hiv/aids.

A forum just for under 30s to discuss the kind of issues you mentioned (studies, work, relationships and self-discovery), isn't really necessary as, like a few have pointed out already, these issues are not unique to folk under 30.

And such issues can easily and comfortably be raised (and often are) in LW and OT.

Does this help at all, ma tasse de miel, or do I need to pour myself an ouzo for breakfast?

I'm 44 and I've got less than five quid to my name at the moment. If I sold my assets (i.e. all the crap I just dragged from one house to another) I would have under ten quid. My finances aren't unstable, they're non-existent.

My relationships fluctuated more in my thirties than in my twenties.

And I'm still figuring out who I am. It's an ongoing process.

Age isn't necessarily a prerequisite of the LTS forum. We do have at least one member I know of who has been hiv positive since birth and if such a person isn't a LTS by the time they hit twenty, I don't know what is.

Just my 2p, without my moderator cape on, I might add.

I can totally relate to all of these issues.  And I'm 42.

Benj, perhaps your real desire / intent is to communicate with more people who
are more like yourself?  I think that is natural -- people tend to feel more comfortable talking
with issues with others who are most like themselves in various respects (age, sexuality,
race, ethnicity, nationality etc. etc. etc.).  What is lost when this happens is the
perspective of those who are different from us, which can be very valuable.

The right balance can be difficult to achieve.   I'd just hate to see poz folks
become too divided of a community -- we do have a lot in common after all.

I hate to disapoint you but, a long-term survivor and I know a couple of children who were born in 1987... with hiv and have somehow made to the ripe old age of 20... ? so how would they fit into your criteria? theyve only known all the pain associated with being poz ... acceptance and societies non-acceptance since their birth... oh and what about a 35 or 60 year old who recently tested poz... they would be considered a newbee... so your whole objective for the forum you request is alittle redundant!

I see no need for another HIV forum as that is what the Living forum is there for, everything that has been mentioned about under 30 having special issues, well I respectfully disagree.  No matter what age you are, you will go through the cycles of HIV, whether you want to or not and your age at infection will have little impact on that.  If you could elaborate on which special issues, other than health care coverage, treatment, challenges, financial issues, psychological issues and a whole slew of others, that we already cover and I might understand your request.

I also disagree that forums should be compared as there is no competition here.  Each forum has been established based on its own merit and many forum ideas have never gone beyond that stage.  If you want a new forum, then make your case and please don't slam another segment of this forum, as if we got special treatment for the LTS forum, because I made the initial post and every other comment is in that thread for everyone to read.  We created the LTS forum based on concensus and if you want that as well, then you need to make a case.

How about a Canadians forum?  After all, a lot of posts about ADAP, Ryan White mean nothing to us Canucks (thank God).

I'm being facetious of course, but there's a danger that the forums become too Balkanized.
