AMG IN San Francisco? Any specific activities?
« on: February 02, 2007, 01:08:54 pm »
I would like to go to SF gathering but am curious about any organized activities?  Is this going to  be an "open" weekend kind of deal where you just enjoy the crowd and tour SF?  Are there any specific activities/presentation/gatherings  etc..being planned? Since some people already have met at other gatherings  maybe they have some suggestions about what might be a reasonable planned activity...at least a "meet & greet"  type session/luncheon/dinner????

Hi Nick.

There will definitely be a "Meet and Greet" night.  We had one our first year in Toronto.  Ric and Thom got married in Montreal and we had a reception which rolled over into the "Meet and Greet".  So of course we will do it again.  Allan from Oakland has already promised what sounds like a terrific walking tour of SF.  You can take a look of his WALKING TOUR here.

OTher ideas are still floating.  It's still early.  If you have any ideas, they're certainly welcome.

Hope to see you there.

Here are a few possibilities for group activities:

  • A visit to the National AIDS Memorial in Golden Gate Park. This used to be a neglected area of the park, but is now a truly beautiful and moving memorial. After this visit, there are many other things to do and see in the park, including a bike ride, or visits to the Japanese Tea Garden, the beautiful Arboretum, the newly-restored Conservatory of Flowers, and the brand new DeYoung Museum. Even if you don't like museums, you'll want to go up to the tower for the great view (admission to the tower is free). You can also rent a boat on Stow Lake. By the way, most of Golden Gate is level.

  • A trip to Alcatraz. If we decide on this, it would be best to get tickets at least a month in advance, especially if it's on a weekend. Here the link to the National Park Service website for Alcatraz: http://www.nps.gov/alca/index.htm

  • The most rewarding and scenically beautiful walks in San Francisco involve walking up and down hills. However, when planning a walking tour, I'd hate to leave out people who would have trouble climbing hlls. As we get closer to the date, I'll have to see what people are up for.

The weather in September is ideal. The days are generally bright and sunny, with daytime temperatures around 70, although sometimes the fog cools things down. The rainy season doesn't usuallly start until November, so you can leave the umbrella at home.

I wish the AMG lasted longer. There are too many things to see and do. Some hard choices will have to be made....

One thing important to note is that  we cannot begin scheduling events until we have a lockdown on the dates of our event and the host hotel.  At that time, we will begin discussing serious scheduling, but till then, we can talk about what we WANT to do.

Here is a sample schedule to use as a template, it's based off of last year's events but perhaps a good starting place to modify.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 THURSDAY

Arrival and check-in throughout the day.

***Pub Crawl***

Time:  "7 or 8 ish"  (TBA)

Place:  Depart from hotel lobby

Guided by:  XXX
This romp is our first night together and serves as a sort of ice breaker.  It also gives us a chance to explore and get a feel for the neighborhood we'll call home for the next several days.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRIDAY

Visit to National Aids Memorial Grove
Time:  10:00 a.m.  (Leave from hotel lobby at 9:30 a.m.)

Place:  The National AIDS Memorial Grove, located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, is a dedicated space in the national landscape where millions of Americans touched directly or indirectly by AIDS can gather to heal, hope, and remember. For all the promising prospects on the horizon, AIDS continues to invade our lives, violate our past, and rob us of our comfortable assumptions about the future. The sacred ground of this living memorial honors all who have confronted this tragic pandemic both those who have died and those who have shared their struggle, kept the vigils, and supported each other during the final hours.

The National AIDS Memorial Grove signifies that the global tragedy of AIDS will never be forgotten.

***Meet & Greet***

Time:  6:00 p.m. Social Hour
          7:00 p.m. Dinner

Location:  TBA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SATURDAY

***An Educational Workshop***
               ** Hopefully Hosted by AIDSMeds.com**

Time:  Coffee Service @ 9:00 a.m.
          Presentation begins at 9:30 a.m.

Location: Hotel Conference Room:

Beginning last year, we are trying to have one or more educational workshops to hold at the event as a lecture and round table discussion.

***San Francisco Site-seeing***

Time:  All afternoon

***Saturday Social Hour***

Time:  6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Location:  Lobby Bar
This get together will be a social hour allowing members to regroup after their free afternoon touring San Francisco. We can relax, unwind, catch-up and reconnect with one another.  From here members can decide on dinner options and plans for later in the evening.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUNDAY

***Day Trip***

Time:  Meet in hotel lobby @ 9:30 a.m./Depart at 10:00 a.m.
          Return:  5:30 p.m.

Cost:  Transportation cost (including van rental & fuel)--Approximately $20.00 - $25.00 per person.  *In previous years, we have made a day trip of leaving our host city and visiting a nearby locale to get a different 'environment'.  Perhaps this year a day trip to Russian River?

This is a complete shot in the dark as San Francisco is such a huge place with so much to offer.  Quite possibly, we won't schedule an 'away' trip this year as there is just so much to do and see in San Francisco.  Likely, again a guess, is that we will schedule an event within the city like alcatraz or some other noted site.  Suggestions are welcome in the forums.

***Sunday Social Hour***

Time:  6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Location:  Lobby Bar

For those members who opted not to make the day trip, this will be their chance to regroup and reconnect just like the Saturday evening event.  From there they can make decisions about dinner and additional plans for the evening.
