Considering she had mental health issues some of these comments are unsavory.

While you're a good one to talk about unsavoury comments, you're right. Some of the comments smack of grave-dancing. Fair enough perhaps  concerning someone who has done immense harm to millions, like say, Osama, but Amy? She was a mixed up kid, so give her at least a bit of a break.

And admired her styles - the pulled-together global chart topper, and the complete mess -- she always did it with superstar flair.

man, that list makes the 70's look really shitty.  janis & hendrix the same year than jim? wtf. robert johnson should definitely be on that list. his influence has left an indelible mark on our musical landscape. the legend alone about him selling his soul to the devil is noteworthy.

Very sad and tragic -
and I agree that this is not a time for insensitive comments -
this was someone's daughter, someone's friend, etc.
and she struggled with addiction - something many on these forums know all too well -
May Amy Rest in Peace.  Another person gone too soon - very frustrating; very sad.

i think in addition to alcohol and drugs we've also had our fair share of personal demons to grapple with. whether depression, low self esteem, tumultuous relationships or fucked expectations (etc, etc) i know a lot of people that have struggled with demons. thankfully most came out on top. not all of them did and i hope their souls are at rest.

r.i.p. amy... your music has found a special place in my life and the lives of many others.

Although I am not familiar with her music, besides "rehab", it is quite tragic and unfortunate to hear that she had passed.  Her life seemed to be out of control and the press did not help. Sad she could not get the help that she needed.

I bought her Back to Black CD when it came out and loved it. I think one reason it is so good is because she appears authentic in her longing, frustration and ambivalence. I never knew much about her as a person other than she had a drug habit. I did read somewhere that in concert when she was "on" she was incredible and when "off" she was a train wreck.

And that's what makes this so sad.  I think we all were hoping she would eventually pull through, but unfortunately she couldn't.

Amy was my London.  She hit it big my first Spring/Summer in the City.  The rest of the 5 years were a disappointing mess, but did make for good conversation when one was done with the weather.  Now she's gone.  Not a surprise but sad, nevertheless.

A few other notable musicians not mentioned here so far who also died aged 27 are Brian Jones of the Stones, Jim Morrison of The Doors and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, the original drummer of the Grateful Dead.

There actually is such a thing called "27 Club". The original “27 club” was Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, who died within 2 years of each other in 1969-1971.

And then there's Richey James (Richey James Edwards) of the Manic Street Preachers, who disappeared February 1st, 1995 at the age of 27 and hasn't been seen since.

Jade Goody also died aged 27. She's not a musician, but she was famous in the UK for being a Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother contestant who went on to remain in the C-list celebrity world. She did a lot to raise awareness of cervical cancer before she died.

Other famous people who died aged 27 include:

Bobby Sands (1981, suicide by starvation in jail due to his involvement in the IRA),

Joseph Merrick “The Elephant Man”, (1890, cause of death not clear)

Steve Olin (1993, American baseball player, boating accident),

Jonathan Gregory Brandis (2003, suicide, American actor, director and screenwriter),

Andrés Escobar (1994, Colombian soccer player, murdered, possibly in retaliation for an "own goal" during a World Cup match)

Andrew Phillip Cunanan, the American "spree-killer" who famously murdered Gianni Versace before committing suicide eight days later in 1997.

The cause of Amy's death has yet to be determined. While there has been much speculation that it was an overdose, Scotland Yard is urging caution over jumping to this conclusion. It wouldn't surprise me if it was more along the lines of a heart attack due to her drug use, but who knows.

Ann, you're right about how a lot of otherwise good, decent people can just make a bad choice, even a single bad choice and it can cost them everything, we are all so vulnerable and many of us are truly lucky to be clacking away at a keyboard right now! ;)

We lost too many young people back in the '70's, still do today, and even if they weren't that unlucky age 27 the likes of Duane Allman, Berry Oakley and many others went away way too early in their lives.  Some auto or motorcycle accidents may or may not have been fueled by drug or alcohol abuse, it really doesn't matter much now.  And although they were such different performers why did Karen Carpenter cross my mind when I heard about Amy Winehouse dying?

I'm so sad even now about Amy's death
and even more sad that she died alone in her house, and probably unhappy...

There's too much confusion.

Many souls live a tortured existence, it is really important for us as a society to embrace all people and all illnesses.  Addiction is an illness; it affects your entire life.  I lost my mother when she was young due to addiction... Amy reminded us all what it was like to hear a soul speak.  If only we as a society would have listened we would still be rich with her talent.  She too is gone to soon.  I love this song, it reminds me of someone that I used to love who sounds so much like the person in the song, and her name was Valerie.  RIP Amy, may your light shine, and may pain no longer exist for you… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6JRttxTBC8

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
Calvin Coolidge
