Title: Hello All
Post by: Ringo on May 20, 2010, 10:46:54 pm
I have been lurking around this board for quiet some time and finally decided to post a few questions. It is great to have a forum like this to learn information on this disease. Even though I am fairly knowledgeable I still learn new things about Hiv that I did not know. .... So on to my situation..

I am a young male who has been divorced for quiet some time now. I have been in the dating field and have always protected myself from getting anyone pregnant or any kinds of other std's by always using condoms. It has always been a must for me. I finally meet a young women who I fell instantly in Love with. For me it was love at first site.  ;D I couldnt take my eyes of off her she was so beautiful. As time went by and we started dating we grew more and more in love with each other. We went from holding hands to kissing to eventually ending up in the bedroom. Just before we were to seal the deal she tells me I have something to tell you. I am Hiv pos. My heart sunk  :( Not that I am afraid of someone who has hiv because I am well informed on how it is transmitted and so forth. I went ahead and was still with her and have always used condoms just like in the past. It has not deterred me one bit and I have been seeing her on a regular basis for about a year now. I love her with all of my heart and I hope to Marry her in the near future. So here is my question... I want to take an Hiv test not because I am worried that I was infected by new girlfriend but when I was married I had some really questionable moments and I knew my X wife cheated on me. Naturally being married and what I thought was a monogamous relationship I did not use condoms with the X wife. My question is I do want to take an Hiv test for my own piece of mind. I was on some heavy antibiotics last week fighting off a chest cold should I wait a specific time to take the test? Would the Antibiotics effect the test?
Thank you for your responses in advance.

Antibiotics will not affect the test.

No, antibiotics would not affect your test result. It's a good idea in general to establish without a doubt your HIV status.

You also should know that many thousands of couples who are sero-discordant are having great lives together in every way including sexually. It means always using condoms to protect the status of the negative partner. And yes, they can also safely have HIV negative children together as fast improvements have been made which make that possible.

Good luck with your test and keep us posted.

Hi Ringo,

I have been in a sero-discordant relationship for 22 years now, and he is still very HIV-.  So, it is not only possible, but we have had a very interesting and fun 22 years together that wouldn't have happened if we had been scared off by my HIV infection.

Next, the HIV test looks for antibodies, so it is virtually impossible for any medication to make a difference in the testing.  If you have been infected in the past, and 12 years is a good standard, you would have already built up antibodies, so they would show up in a test, regardless of medications in your body.

Go ahead and test, it would be important for you to know with this new relationship.  :)

Thank you to all who replied. I do plan on getting the test done. I am not afraid of getting anything from her. I love her with all my heart and yes we have even talked about having kids together.
