Dull pain on right side of my abdomen
« on: September 26, 2009, 02:24:06 pm »
Hi all,

I've been having a dull pain for over a month on the right side of my abdomen and am at a loss as to what it is.  The pain comes and goes and is usually worse in the evening.  All my labs are all within normal ranges with the exception of Creatinine Kinase which is 268.  I am on Atripla.  My doctor has done an x-ray and ultrasound of my abdomen and it all looks normal she says.  I was concerned about Hep C so we did a Hep C antibody test and that came back negative.  I'm not sure what this could be due to.. if it's from the Atripla or something else altogether?  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, there are quite a few organs on the right side of the abdomen.  Is it worse when you eat?  By the way, I would never offer what would amount to an internet diagnosis. Of course, everything should be confirmed by a physician.  I was just wondering if it was worse after you eat, because I had that some years back, and it was my gallbladder.

It actually seems to abate with food so I'm not sure what that is about...  I'm looking for some leads to follow up with my doctor...maybe I should see a gastroenterologist?

I started Artpila 11 days ago and have experienced a similar symptom.   I thought it could just be gas and took a GasX and it has gone away.   I hope it was just that simple.

Not to throw you all off, but....
I year ago, before I started back on Meds, I started having a dull pain on the lower right side of my abdomen.  I specify lower because, your gall bladder is in the upper right quadrant, and your appendix is in the lower right quadrant (there is chronic appendicitis and acute appendicitis - the dangerous kind).  My Small Town Doc said to just watch what I eat.  Over the months it became a sharp stabbing pain.
I now live in the San Fransisco area, and have an ID specialist. Besides putting me on Atripla, she ordered an Ultra sound, Cat Scan, and Fecal Study :-\
I have a few gallstones, and several fibroids in my uterus.  There was no swelling or inflammation of any of the internal organs, so that rules out the gall stone or appendix as the problem.  The OBGYN said that she has several patients who have more and bigger fibroids than mine who do not have any pain.  So, she does not think the pain is from those.  The Ultra sound Tech did tell my that she saw gas when I asked her to look at the part of my abdomen that was in pain.  None of the doctors mentioned gas as the cause.
I spoke to a class mate of mine who had also been into the ER several times because of abdominal pain, and she told me that her pain ended up being from gas and she now takes Gas-Ex.  I've tried the Gas-Ex and it does make the pain go away.  But it still comes back.
Maybe, there is an HIV related chronic gas issue that is make worse by Atripla?  I dunno, has anyone spoken to their Docs about chronic gas?

One of the parts of Truvada (which are in Atripla) does cause gas as a side effect in some people.  I had a similar ache and gasX does seem to make it disappear.  I only take it when I need to for this ache.

This may NOT be a solution for everyone but it does appear to work for me.

Hi, I have been poz for 16 years on 3 different drug regimens. They ALL have some gastrointestinal side effects. Have you had an endoscopy of your stomach, a colonoscopy? After I passed these 2 exams, the answer was to take GERD medication, Prevacid, & eat small amounts more often. The pain was worse when my upper GI system was completely empty. I also feel better when I eat whole wheat bread & cereal(fiber) & avoid white bread products. Good luck with it. Deibster :)

In another thread about atripla and food it was suggested to take it with a light, non-fatty snack instead of an empty stomach.  I tried this last night.  No gas!  And I slept all night for the first time since my diagnosis.  Beats gasX although that works too

Hi all,

I've been on Atripla for about 2 years and I don't seem to be having the kinds of problems that are describe here.  Luckily!  I did give up a lot of red meat for the past 6 months, but that was a cholesterole problem, but now thats under control too.  But now at least if I start to have the abdominal pains I will know what might be causing it and can tell my doctor.

thanks everyone for the info.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the helpful comments and suggestions.  I've been experimenting with the timing of the Atripla in the evening and it appears that I was eating dinner to close to my dosing.  As long as I leave at least 2 hours between eating and when I take my dose I don't have pain or gas.  I hope it was as simple as that.

Thanks again
