Zinc supplements
« on: October 03, 2010, 10:14:45 am »
At my last appointment with my study coordinator I asked what she would recommend to increase my cd4 levels. She told me to take zinc supplements. I already take a multivitamin that contains 70% of the daily recommended amount. Should I take a zinc supplement on top of that? Anyone here taking zinc supplements?

Our research doesn't pull up anything on zinc and HIV but I have found something interesting which may help in the CD4 issue.
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FDN/is_4_5/ai_65068469/?tag=content;col1

It is a small study of 11 individuals but is worth noting.
My doctor likes the idea of taking L-carnitine and we will see what happens.
I make no claims and do not suggest anyone do anything other than read the information and make up their own minds.

Cheers,
Hoover

Eleven asymptomatic HIV-infected individuals who were not receiving any antiviral treatment, received daily infusion Of six grams L-carnitine for four months.[89] Prior to the study they all had been experiencing steady CD4 count declines for 12 months. At day 150, mean CD4 counts were significantly elevated and a positive trend was observed for increases in CD8 counts (Table 2). Two subjects had a doubling of their CD4 count, two had a more than 50-percent increase, three had approximately 30-percent increases, and three had no significant increase over baseline. The researchers also saw a significant drop in apoptotic cell death in both CD4 and CD8 cells (p [is less than] 0.001 for both values). Ceramide levels were significantly higher than in HIV-negative individuals, and dropped significantly over the course of the trial. HIV-1 viremia increased slightly over the 150-day period. There was no toxicity related to the L-carnitine therapy.

I used to have tinnitus which I'm pretty sure developed because of Sustiva. A daily zinc supplement of 20mg keeps my tinnitus away, except when I take an aspirin. It also makes me feel better generally, but that might just be something I imagine. Anyway - zinc is also important for the maturation process of T-cells in the thymus gland.

Excess zinc cannot be readily stored in the body. You can get a simple taste test to see if you are deficient. Excess zinc suppresses absorption of copper and iron (both bad).

Supplement wise, the common ones in health food shops are often poor on intake, carbonate and oxide forms being especially useless. The picolinate form seems best absorbed.

There's no point in taking in more than around 20mg/day of (absorbable) zinc. If you's gonna take zinc this is probably a good daily dose. Especially if you cum a lot, cos that loses you loads of the stuff.

Like the links in the previous post.

Important to note that homeopathic zinc used as a nasal spray has been linked to loss of smell - here is one link; however, a google search will turn up lawsuits, etc related to this.
