I have the same regard for this as I do for all the other very smart concepts of "cure" developments from over the decades. 

Anyhow this one started off in 2018 to hit the news, we're not much further at the moment but who knows maybe if it works and that's a big "if" after a few years of testing we might have something one day in a far and distant future.

Why does this "cure" interest you over all the others? Also as you are new to the forum it's customary to introduce yourself to the forum members. Are you living with HIV? How are you getting on what are your labs looking like and how are you getting on with treatment?

Hello Jim,

Sorry I did not present myself. I have been living with the desease for the last 2 years. My viral load has been undetected for 16 months now.
I am interested in this as it is the only trial that got FDA approval regarding gene therapy in human trials for HIV and hopefully we will get the phase I results by the end of next year. I have not seen any other trial like this one, but I don’t see too many news about it.

Look every year someone or company or some nation claims to have the next big cure, for at least the past 20 years that I know of and I suspect even before that.

It's a catchword that gets attention and more to the point investment, they always claim it's a smarter newer unique way of doing it as well. Scientifically it's absolutely fascinating stuff however as the patient my take on it is until it's in my hand it's just interesting noise.

BTW - If you search the "Research News & Studies" section for the keyword "cure" you will find decades of great announcements that did not work out. It's great we keep learning from this stuff though in the sense of scientific development

Sorry if I sounded naive on posting something related to a “cure” (though it might not be a cure but an improve in treatment). I know that these news might be even a lifetime apart, though I do think that some news should be more “visible” than others.

Regarding my current state, I am living with the disease for 2 years nowand I never been on a forum like this before. I tend to read news regarding hiv treatments from time to time, specially because I live in a country where retrovirals are not always 100% available (though hopefully it never affected me personally, but it is something that worries people with hiv in my country sometimes).

It’s cool to see advances regarding treatments, mainly those like injectables or “long-term” treatments alike for for these issues, as interruption of hiv treatment nowadays might produce resistance.

don't feel bad. It seems most people are anxious for a cure during their first few years after diagnosis. That's not naive, that's just hopeful thinking ... or maybe it's just wishful thinking. HIV, like retroviral cancers, is a tricky virus and will be very hard to cure. That's why more than a "cure", improvements to treatment are much more likely.

personally as someone who has been living with HIV for 35, I'd rather not hear any news about a cure until it's out of trials and my doctor is able to write the prescription. Ever since those earliest days, scientists, and "flamboyant" reporting, have been predicting a cure "within the next few years". Thank goodness I wasn't really waiting for that cure, or I would have been dead by now. Treatment for HIV is pretty simple these days as most regimens have just a few pills. HIV treatment really isn't much different from taking meds for high blood pressure or cholesterol every day

well it depends on what the "interruption" is. To develop resistance you have to still be taking your meds but taking them haphazardly - like if you take meds for a few days and then skip a few days, and then take meds a few days and then skip a few days. To develop resistance the level of HIV meds has to dip just low enough for HIV to learn how to evade that med. If you stay at least 95% adherent by taking your meds HIV can't become resistance because the level of meds stays high enough to defeat HIV. (BTW this ability to adapt is part of why a cure is so elusive) If however your adherence to the meds is not good, like 80% 70% or 50%, then HIV might become resistance to the meds. Resistance does NOT happen if you take your meds daily as prescribed.
