Dovato DTG + 3TC
« on: April 09, 2019, 04:43:16 am »
Amazing medication that I highly recommend. I've had zero side effects on this and you can take with or without food. Great news about the trial I have been on since March 2016. The new dual therapy medication of Dolutegravir & Lamivudine (DTG/3TC) has been approved and will be called Dovato.

Quote
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved ViiV Healthcare’s fixed-dose, single-tablet regimen Dovato (dolutegravir/lamivudine) to treat HIV among those new to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy whose virus does not have mutations associated with either of the drugs in the combination tablet.

Dovato is the second HIV regimen to be approved that includes just two ARVs rather than three or more, as has been standard. The first two-drug regimen, Juluca (dolutegravir/rilpivirine), got the nod from the FDA in November 2017. Dovato is the first to be approved for people starting HIV treatment for the first time.

Both Dovato and Juluca are based on the integrase inhibitor dolutegravir (sold separately as Tivicay). The lamivudine component of Dovato belongs to the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) class of ARVs while the rilpivirine component of Juluca is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI).

Dovato has a black box warning for those with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Consequently, those starting the HIV regimen should receive HBV testing. Because HBV has been shown to develop resistance to the lamivudine component of Dovato, those who are HIV/HBV coinfected and opt to take the HIV regimen are advised to receive additional hep B treatment.

Great news! I tried this combo for a month based on the results of the Gemini study with great results and none of the gassy side effects of the tenofovir based regimen I've been on for six years since my diagnosis.

Pricing should be interesting as both of these drugs are available generically.

Well this is pretty disappointing. $27,540/yr

https://fairpricingcoalition.org/2019/04/09/dovato-approval-price/

To put this in perspective I can pay for a flight from the US to India, hotel and cash for the same combo every month for about the same cost!

But hey, at least it's more affordable :(

This is interesting, this is the same as my Triumeq minus the Abacavir component.  Wonder if it would work for me?

The data on this combo is pretty strong. The main concern on a switch to a two drug combo would be adherence.

I feel very happy to hear that Dolutegravir + Lavimudine has been working well for you!

I would like to have access to that treatment in my country too. Currently, I take Dolutegravir + Lamivudine + Tenofovir (300mg), I feel unsafe to use this last because of the long term effects it has reported to cause.

I will ask my doc about the possibility, and accessibility, of this 2-drug ART, but I think it will only be available if the Ministry of Health recommend it.

Please keep us posted about how is yout treatment going.
