Partial vaginal penetration - am I at risk?
« on: February 01, 2012, 09:40:12 am »
Hi, I have been reading a number of threads on this forum and also the HIV transmission lesson, but I haven't managed to find one that is similar to my situation.

Two nights ago I was at a massage place in Kuala Lumpur and halfway through, the masseuse offered me extra services. I accepted her offer although I didn't have a condom at hand. She swore that she had no STDs of any sort, so very stupidly, on impulse I went ahead with it.

She pulled back my foreskin (I am uncircumcised) and guided my penis into her vagina. However, I was in a half-erect state and I had trouble keeping it erect because it was really cold. After a short while of trying to bang her with a penis that was steadily growing limper and limper, I gave up as I had started to shiver due to the cold. I settled for a handjob after that, and didn't think much about the encounter until after I got back home, after that I started to get worried about whether she had been lying about not having any STDs since she was from a 3rd world country, Indonesia.

In total, my penis was in her for about 2-3 minutes, maybe 5 minutes at most. She was not very wet; I couldn't really feel moisture nor was my penis wet (or damp) after I withdrew it. Also, since I was half erect I don't think I went very deep into her. She was petite, but I am not very big down there.

Given what happened, what is my risk of contracting HIV assuming she was positive? Should I get tested? There probably wasn't much chance of her fluids entering the hole on the tip of my penis, but because I am uncircumcised I am worried about exposure through the foreskin.

Your advice is greatly appreciated

You had unprotected penetrative sex eventhough it was on the low risk side you'll need to test not only for HIV but other STDs as well.

Thank you. Do you think I should wait and take a test after 13 weeks or go for the more expensive RNA test?

mild,

You don't need RNA testing. You only need antibody testing.

The earliest you should test is at six weeks as the vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by this point, with the average time to seroconversion being only 22 days. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point, but is highly unlikely to change.

You can test for the other much more easily transmitted STIs at ten days to two weeks or sooner if you develop a discharge. Some STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms (notably syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia), so the ONLY way to know for sure is to test. Syphilis shares a three month testing window with hiv.

You're not very likely to have been infected with hiv from this one-off incident, but you do need to test to make sure.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
