Dads not doing well!!!
« on: November 20, 2006, 10:07:33 pm »
Hello everyone,

Hope all is good with you guys.

I will try to make a long story short, Dad was admitted on Nov 2, with high fever & lots of pain, later (a week later) diagnosed with gall stones. The problem...very low blood count so we could not do the procedure to remove them until his count was up. His heart rate also went up to 167 so he was moved to  ICU to bring that down & monitor.  So for the next 6 days he received platelets, plasma and whole blood, still a problem building up his count so they put him on steroids, they were finally able to do the procedure on Nov 15 and removed 6 large stones. To our surprise he went home on Fri. Nov 17.
Surprised because they were planning to go back in & remove the gall bladder, now ? and also he had begun to swell all over, feet hands, etc. But they said it was due to all of the fluids that he had received recently.

Now it is Nov 20, last night he began throwing up, a black substance and diarrhea, also black. So now he is back in the hospital, he has gained 20 lbs since admission on Nov 2. He is so bloated that he can't even feel his feet. His blood pressure was 212/87 at time of admission and heart rate of 137. Platelet count under 40 not sure about the rest, I was searching for a pen but trying to hear & remember what I could. He IS bleeding internally!!

There was mention of possible ulcer, possible heart failure, & possible "who knows". They need to do an endoscope to find the bleeding but can't until his blood count is better. They have once again, started him on platelets and given something to hopefully help with the fluid retention, but said until they know where the bloating is coming from this is all they can do.

I hope I haven't left anything out. Please for those of you who pray, remember him and for those of you who don't please think of us!

My Best to ALL of you!!
                                        Lisa

  Lisa,

I am so sorry to hear this.   I know this is a very stressful time for you and really have nothing  soothing to ease your worry.  But please stay strong, your support and love means the world to him.   I know you already know this and admire the strength you have displayed during this ordeal.   I hope he gets better so he can continue his time on earth here with such a beautiful and caring daughter  .  Lisa, you are both in my thoughts and prayers.

   Sincerest Regards,

Thanks to all of you.

Today I went to see him & he lost 10 lbs over night, they injected him with something (not sure of the name) to make him urinate ALOT!! So that was a plus, but they took him to surgery to do the endoscope to see where the bleeding is coming from and sent him right back because of his blood counts were too low, so tonight they plan to give him more platlets and try again tomorrow. He is just sooooo depressed, he wanted to be home for Thanksgiving, when they sent him home on friday, he thought he would be but now,, I really doubt it & so does he. I can deal with "A" lost holiday if that means I have ALOT more with him.

Thanks again guys,, it really means alot to be able to vent.

My best to all if you!!!!

Lisa,

Just do the best you can to bring up his spirits.  I'm glad he's lost some of the retained fluids.  That should help him to feel somewhat better, if anything, more comfortable.  If he's got congestive heart failure, make sure you stay on the nurses about how much his iv drip is on.  I've had to get onto many a nurse for opening up an IV for my husband.

I hope they find the source of the bleeding and are able to fix it while they are in there.

My thoughts are with you daily, and pray that he gets out soon.

(Find out if he can have some home made turkey and thanksgiving dinner).

Ok, New update

Dad's blood count finally came up enough for them to do the scope on Nov 22, and the found that he has esophagitis, there were 3 spots of erosion and they biopsied them, we will get the results later. On Thanksgiving day they gave him 2 units of whole blood & then sent him home, no explanation for the severe swelling. Today the 24th, he is still swollen, ( not as bad as Monday when he went in) but he can still barley walk. I really wonder if they check everything out??? or do they come up with an answer for the current, life threatening problem, then forget the rest. Its almost like, "OK, we've found SOMETHING to tell the family" Now send him home.

I thank all of you for letting me vent !!!!

Hope all of you are doing great!!!

   Thinking of you all,  Lisa

Lisa,

Yes, the swelling can be caused by all the fluids they pumped into your dad.

Louie, my other half, had 2 units of blood and fluids around the clock.  They were trying to get his electrolites and other levels under control.

Louie was given diaretics also so that he could get rid of a lot of the fluids.  He too started swelling.  They also monitored how much he was urinating.  Not sure why your dad had so much swelling.  It took time for the fluids to build up, it's going to take some time for it to get better.  Hang in there.

I do know that when someone is week that certain counts need to be at a certain level before a procedure can be done.  Louie was in need of a colonoscopy but he was too week and they said he would not survive the procedure if there were complications.

Hang in there for your dad, you've been doing the right thing for him.  Keep up with everything that is going on and ask lots of questions.  If something doesn't make sense to you ask for them to explain it until you understand what's going on.  When you write something down like a procedure of any other technical stuff, search on WebMD.com or a general search on-line for more information.  I did many a night and learned quite a bit.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Love and Light,
Rev. Michael
