"CENTERFOLD" by J. GEILS BAND
« on: January 21, 2017, 10:46:53 am »
The owner of a small food store which l frequently go to loves the music from the 1980s and the oldies from that time are always on in his store.   Today J.  GEILS BAND's CENTERFOLD was played.  It was a hit when l was in high school.  My knowledge of English was still very limited then and l could not even catch the words in that song.  But with the help of its lyrics given in a music magazine, l was able to understand what the song was all about.
It starts with this -" Does she walk. Does  she talk. Does she c*+!  complete?"   It was an exciting thing to know for boys at puberty and my classmates really got a kick out of it.  And had l not gotten to know that song, l would not have had a chance to learn the word "centerfold".   It was also this song that taught me that 'center' was often pronounced like 'cenner' in America.  That experience helped me communicate with a local bus driver  when l was in Honolulu for the first time -  he said to me, "Get off at Alamoana CENNER and change to NO. 58!"

Today l have been thinking back of my younger days.

It's only pronounced 'cenner' due to lazy pronunciation and regional accent. I'm sure most folk in America would understand you if you said 'centre' :)

A lot of people in London would call 'town' 'tarn' but I wouldn't recommend learning that as a common way to say it!

Ptkt,

  Thank you very much.
With the lyrics you had pasted,  l made sure if l had memorized them correctly.

In 1984, l stayed in a motel for the first time-it was MOTEL 6 in Spokane.  I didn't bring in a girl taking her off in private, of course!!!!

Thank you.

Daniel, wow, that's a long, long time ago.  Nothing like an old song to make a person think of when s/he was young!  I believe I was just getting out of high school when that was a hit.

Hi, Betty,

I like BAD GIRL, too.
Do you know Mimi's song?
To the Japanese ears, that sounds like mimizu song and that means song of worms.
We then kids made fun of it a lot.

And GOGO's We Got the BEAT:   l was in high school.
One teacher told me to stop chanting the sutra, hearing me humming that song.
It sounded to the teacher like, wigazabeewigazabeewigazabee.
