Hiv from toothbrush?

Hey guys! Im all new here,so bear with me please. Also forgive my grammar as lm not english.
So,my husbands brother is hiv possitive for the last 8 years. Every now and then i get worried about little things and the risk of hiv. My husband visits his brother often and spends days staying with him. I know when he visits he has his toothbrush in the bathroom with his brother. Is there any risk if one of them uses the other ones by mistake?? And what if they  have bleeding gums? Can this lead to an infection? Im sorry but im stressing out,i just want to know so i can stop thinking of it. Thanx!

So I read your post three times.

Now normally I give "what if" questions zero attention however in this situation it involves someone actually living with HIV.

I presume the person living with HIV is successfully on treatment and therefore can't pass on HIV unless you share needles and directly inject a volume of blood directly into the bloodstream.

However, let's presume they are not on treatment, well then there is still no toothbrush HIV risk. This was ruled out as a route to aquire HIV decades ago as HIV is fragile, corrodes outside the confines of the human body and needs brute force to overcome the initial immune system and that's not going to happen with damaged HIV on a toothbrush.

So your partner had no HIV risk from the toothbrush. As for your risks well ...I'll mention the same thing I do whenever anyone mentions being in a relationship. If you engage in condomless sex with your partner, you are obviously at risk of acquiring HIV. In relationships, condomless sex is often based on trust or past test results; however, this does not prevent HIV. Any condomless sex simply means accepting the greater risk of acquiring HIV.


Here's what you need to know to avoid HIV infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms, and the only way of knowing is by testing.

Hi Jim! Thank for your quick reply! I guess i deep down knew the answer allready..but unfortunately is hard not to dwell  in what if,especially when various sources include toothbrush use or razors as potential risk!  I know that hiv is a very fragile virus. So there is no risk? Even if infected blood was on toothbrush and  the other person who uses the toothbrush has bleeding gums?  That is because the virus dies right away? Excuse me for still asking questions,i just want to learn so i im more relaxed and understand better

You're welcome.

No risk for a combination of reasons. To start with as you mentioned HIV is fragile and corrodes outside of human body, besides this saliva is also hostile towards HIV breaking down the receptors needed to infect.

Understand somewhat why in the 80's and early 90's these activities were suspected at times but thankfully we now understand how HIV is or isn't passed on and more importantly why that is.

Stop posting outside of this thread and stop looking for an issue you don't have or asking questions that have already been answered. Your questions are not genuine, they are just you trying to find an HIV risk from day-to-day contact with people where there is zero risk.

Your adult HIV risks are limited.

- Sex
- Sharing drugs rigs (Syringes)
- Blood transfusions (Rare thanks to screening)

It's simple don't share syringes, use condoms, consider PrEP as an additional layer and, test yearly out of standard routine..

If you keep having these fears and can't move on with your life, then consider speaking to a therapist to help you manage them, but I'm not going to warn you again, and the next time you will get a ban from the forums.
