The Thai insurance companies pretty much deny coverage for any preexisting conditions… Even a healthy individual with a high BMI is precluded…

My strategy has been a mix of coverage and just paying myself

First I keep my home country (US) in place with full medical coverage - With Obama Care I get it for a very reasonable price ;-)…

Next I have a long term medical insurance policy from a UK based company for $50k of medical coverage anywhere but the US. I am not advocating this company to anyone as I have never had to file a claim… I pay less than $1,000 a year for some piece of mind…

Here in country I have a car and motorcycle with CLASS ONE insurance that has medical insurance in case of an accident… I can not stress enough that if you are on a motorbike have CLASS ONE insurance with medical, It is easy to get and cheap… The single most reason you will end up needing medical is because of a motorbike accident.

Also I have a basic accident policy that is not medically underwritten… It’s small amount but only costs a few hundred dollars a year and again I not recommended this company as I’ve never had to file a claim but it will give you an idea of what’s available…

Basic medical care is relatively cheap and I’ve always paid out of pocket… My HIV care consists of bi annual bloodwork and doctor visit that cost about $250 each…. My meds cost me ~2,000 baht a month which is about $60 usd… You can get meds for half that price at the Red Cross clinic in Bangkok… (Search this forum for more details) Here is a link to the HIV meds that are generally available… https://th.trcarc.org/medical-service/
