Title: Two broken condoms within 7 days - HIV risk?
Post by: fleurs on July 09, 2013, 04:50:14 pm
Hello

I'm a gay 28-yo male living in southern Portugal.

Last week, I went cruising in a park at night-time and met this black muscular tattoed guy.  This guy put a condom on and tried to fuck me.  He didn't use any lube at all.  He was trying to push his dick into me, but could not.  Just as he was trying to push it in, there was a loud pop and we both felt the condom break.  He immediately stopped - he had not inserted and had his dick pushed against my rear, but it was no way inserted - and put on a new condom and he fucked me for about 50 seconds.  I was so freaked out by the first condom breaking, all I could think of was the 2nd condom breaking.  I got him to stop and left.  He didn't ejaculate in either the 1st broken condom or the 2nd.  I went back next day and found both condoms and poured water into them, and saw that the 1st condom did indeed break, but the 2nd condom didn't.

Given what I've reported, was this a risk for HIV?

Secondly, I met another guy at the beach who put on a condom and fucked me.  He did not use any lube either.  We were disturbed by someone walking past and he pulled out from my butt.  Just as he was about to re-insert into my butt, there was a sensation on the condom, and I was quite sure it had broken.  He did not re-insert but the head of his penis was near my butt.  I saw that the condom had indeed broken, not at the tip but a little way up.  There was no cum in the condom, he had not shot his load at all.

When he pulled the condom off, there was a tiny bit of plastic remaining on his dick, the piece that had popped.  It had broken inwards.  The rest of the condom was very intact.  It seems that the condom did not break whilst he was fucking me, only when he withdrew and tried to re-insert.

Was this a risk for HIV?

I'm extremely worried and grateful of any advice, please.

Both incidents happened within 7 days of each other.  Neither guy came during either act, but I'm worried about pre-cum.

thank you for any help you can offer me,

Hi Fleurs . The situation with the broken condom would be considered a low risk , but that doesn't add up to no risk . You can test at 6 weeks past any possible unprotected vaginal or anal sex , then again at 3 months to confirm the results .

Im calling your situation low risk because you seem unsure about the broke condom but anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Hello thanks so much for your advice.

Tomorrow - friday - is 6 weeks exactly since the last incident with the broken condom occurring on 28 June.

Today - Thursday -  I had a fingerprick 4th gen test and the result was negative.

Does it matter that I'm 1 day short of 6 weeks, please?

I understand that I should test again 3 months post the incident just to exclude the 5 per cent of peiple who have been found to seroconvert up to 3 months.  Is this also correct?

Thank you for your help

It doesn't matter you are day early and your 6 week test is not going to change when you test again at 3 months . Thanks for the update !

Hi there Jeff

Thanks so much for all your help.  This is a great relief to me and it's funny what the weeks of anxiety can do to the body - neck aches, swollen glands, headaches etc all of which made me believe I might have been exposed to hiv.

The nurse who saw me was very nice indeed, the test itself was not as nerve wracking as I had imagined. The clinic have offered me counselling for my health anxiety too.

I could not have got through this difficult 6 weeks without you.  Thanks so much for your words of advice. You and Ann and Andy are stars!

Best wishes
