States With Adap Waiting Lists

There are a hanful of states that have a waiting list for ADAP health care.  I know that this topic has been discussed here in the past; however, I wanted to elaborate on a certain element.  What does a person who is HIV+ do if they live in one of those states>..??  The first course of action that comes to mind would be to go to the nearest ASO (Aids Service Organization).  Some of these organizations are better than others.  On a personal level, I have never faired all that well with most of the ASO's. 

The first state that comes to mind with quite an extensive waiting list if the wonderful Sunshine State, Florida.  I can think of 50 other US states or territories that I would rather live than there.  So what is someone who is positive to do if he were to relocate to Florida and need health care.  Sure the Ryan White program is in place; therefore, he can see a physician.  How about his HIV medications...  What to do in this situation.  I understand that there are PAP's (Patient Assistance Programs), but are those always 100%.  Let's face it, the pharmaceutical companies can not give too much of the medication away for free.  There is only so much that they can write off on their taxes. 

I will tell someone what to do.  Do your research!!!!!  Use a popular search engine such as Google or Yahoo, and research, "states with ADAP waiting lists."  If the state that you are contemplating moving to has a list,call the main ADAP number because the waiting list may be cleared.  For example, the state of Wyoming had a waiting list, albeit a very small one, but a waiting list of 2 or 3 people.  It was cleared and just not yet updated online.  The main offices for ADAP for each state and Puerto Rico are usually in the capital of that state.  Go to:  www.aegis.com and start your search from there.  At this website, you will find the primary contact telephone numbers for ADAP and the contact person's name. 

When a patient needs his or her HIV medicatons, it is just that simple, they need them in order to survive!!!!!  I remember back in 2008 when President Obama won the election and so many thought it was going to be different.  Not me!!!  I never bought into it.  The situation is worse now than it was five years ago. 

Charity begins at home.  Why is money sent to Africa, Latin America, South America, and southeast Asia when we can not even take care of our own in the United States.  At this given time, the furthest that ADAP/Ryan White should be going is Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, and any other US territory.

Wow! I miss one update because of the holidays and my Nana having hip replacment surgery (lordy, don't let me turn 94! LOL) and people go crazy. ROFL    I'm not certain where you were getting your information but Wyoming was actually cleared from the official list back in Aug or Sept of 2011.

I've been posting a regular update of the ADAP waiting list numbers for several years now on this site, in this forum. the newest one is here, ADAP Watch List Updates January 2012 .

The best place to find always accurate ADAP numbers (without the mess of contacting all 50 states and territories LOL) is at http://nastad.org. Click the link on the right to "ADAP WATCH". These numbers are accurately reported by the state's health dpts and updated every two weeks.

However, all that said, you do make a very valid point that I often have to tell people in the forums when they are looking to move to another state - check your resources and check ADAP before you even plan on moving! It would be stupid to leave good benefits to move to an area where you'd have to search, fight or not have adequate health care.

Yes, after some reserach, the Florida waiting list has cleared up quite a bit.  I was surprised.  When we lived there, the ASO's clearly were not that great.  We were with Project Response.
