Is it false positive?

Dear Dr.

I am a new member and posting here the first time for some advise in the hardest moment in my life. Thank you at first.

I had protected sex with a prostitution 6 weeks ago. First apologize here, I know protected sex is not a risk, but during that less than 5 minutes, I am soft and I changed condom several times. That's why I am worried and got tested.

After 6 weeks, I got a oralquick test at a clinic. The nurse told me the first test they get a very faint line. And immediately they did a oralquick test again. Again they told me there was a very faint line. But to be honest, I can not see the faint line by myself because it was really very very faint I guess. Then they told me I am preliminary positive. I got WB blood test, and got really scared.

After one day, I went to 3 different clinics, did 2 oralquick test and 1 rapid blood test. All 3 results came back as negative. And I also went to LabCorp to do a blood draw to test HIV antibody and HIV RNA quantitative. Both results came back as negative.

My questions are:
1. is the first preliminary positive a false positive?
2. is it conclusive that both HIV antibody and HIV RNA negative after 6 weeks?

You never had an exposure from oral sex and protected vaginal sex  and masturbation.

Hi 123 , I have to agree with Rod , you never had a risk .

HIV is acquired sexually from unprotected penetrative vaginal or anal sex , as long as you are using condoms correctly and consistently you will avoid exposure to HIV .

Had you had a risk you the correct time to test is 6 weeks post exposure and again at  3 months to confirm the results . You should trust the negative rapid test as proof that you are HIV negative since you never had a risk to begin with .

Considering that your activities as described carried absolutely NO risk for HIV infection, and false positive do happen (and they almost always present as a very faint line,) you have nothing at all to worry about.

Some people seem predisposed to test with a false positive on the rapid tests. I've seen it here a few times. If it helps your anxiety, you could always get a blood test. They seem to have far fewer false positives, and they always run a western blot if the ELISA tests positive regardless.

I agree with the guys - you are hiv negative and didn't have a risk in the first place.

A faint line is more correctly termed "indeterminate". It's neither positive nor negative. You did NOT have a positive result.

You are conclusively hiv negative and do not need further testing at this point in your life.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!
