Advice please - working after disability lump sum payout
« on: October 02, 2015, 05:46:11 pm »
I've chosen to opt for a lump sum payment in lieu of future (private policy) long-term disability payments. Now that I've made that decision, I would like to try working part time from home. I know that I would have many more opportunities if I were to find work elsewhere but I am having significant health issues that would make a daily commute impossible.
Of course I know that almost all the "work from home" info on websites is utter bullshit. However I need to make money somehow. It's not a choice - I must do it or I won't survive. Social security alone isn't enough. There must be some enlightened legit employers who would hire a guy who has been out of the workforce for a while but has decent personal and computer skills.  If anyone has any info on this I would really appreciate it.
As I understand it, in order to keep my SSDI benefits, I can make $85 a month and after that I can make only 50 cents on the dollar before taxes - meaning I would have to make (approximately) twice as much money as what I was getting from my private LTD policy to maintain my standard of living.  Please correct me if I am mistaken.
Thank you very much in advance for any good info you may have.
Diagnosed 1988.
