They told me that my CD4 might not rise ?
« on: August 16, 2013, 11:53:47 am »
Hi everybody,

Just been to hospital today, and beside headache, MC and hairloss Im feeling OK.... :-\

My doctor told me that I might never get above my current level of CD4!

I dont understand her, but she Said this just 3 hours ago.

April 12 tested poz
April 17 cd4 zero
April 25 cd4 3 and TB
Maj 15 cd4 120
June 15 cd 4 120
July 15 cd 120
August 15 cd4 100

My virusload have been UD since june, and because of the TB Medicine she Will/cant change my Isentress/truvada.(i had severe reaction in the beginning with other haart med)

I dó understand that I cant Expect a rise, for at least the next 6 months because of the TB Medicine i take.
Im also very happy about my situation now with 100, compared to just 3 montes ago with zero cd4 and IRIS and TB.

Maybe she just want me to feel happy about my improvement ? - but what u guys think, shoudnt I hope for a rise within a year ?

Kind regards
Peter

Once your cd4 has been so low you are not guaranteed to recover very many of them. On diagnosis I had a cd4 of 15 and now 4 years later I am at about 240. There is no guarantee it will get any higher. I think your doctor is just not trying to give you false hope. I felt and functioned fine at around the 100 cd4 mark.  Age also plays a large role in cd4 recovery.

I had a extremely low cd4 count in the 90 's and just did see numbers over 450 / 500 in the last 2 years . After I broke the 500 range its got a little better with every draw and now I'm seeing 650 / 700 numbers .

The good news is your viral load is down , as for the cd4 counts , slow and steady wins the race in this instance .

I am not sure but it sounds like your doctor simply said don't expect huge gains in your cd4 count while you are under TB treatment ? .

From zero to 100 is 100% rise THAT IS ASTONISHING!

Keep up the meds and think for the future

All the best to you and your recovery!

Hi Peter

My DC4 dropped to 160, took 3 months to get me to 180 and now 3 months later I'm at 210.

It has taken me a good 6 months to get those 50 little buggers back, but like Jeff said slow and steady wins the race.

It will take you a little longer because you were low but don't stress out about it, just take one month at a time and keep taking the meds.

From zero to 100 is 100% rise THAT IS ASTONISHING!

I think 1 to 2 is 100% increase.  I'm lousy at math but I believe the increase here, 1 to 100, is many times "100%".   :o ???

Anyway, hey Newguy - it think its common for CD4 to rise in fits and starts.  Ive been on this forum about 5 years and there are people who report hovering at one level for years and then suddenly it doubles.  And then even doubles again!  But it can be slow going.

I guess the doc was being honest according to his/her knowledge, but its not all that constructive to say such a thing to someone newly diagnosed with a wrecked immunity.  I'd rather you believe, and thus have faith and the peace of mind, that if you stick to your medicine, you will make it to the safety zone. Though it may take time.

MECHH you are correct! My mistake it is like 10 000% increase which is even more astonishing! Thanks for pointing that out!

And peterdenmark just stick to your guns and look forward my friend was at 22 when he was diagnosed and now is at 700! Took some time but he got there.

My ID doctor pretty much answers "I don't know" to all the questions I ask him about HIV. The one exception is when I ask him if HIV will kill me and he answers "NO". If I follow my treatment guidelines.

Best to you Peter!

Hey Peter, I agree with everyone else. You can expect your CD4s to rise, but it may take a while.

All you can do is keep taking your meds, and make sure you're getting enough rest, getting some (gentle) exercise, and eating right. Try to not stress out too much. Stress isn't good for anyone, and especially not a person trying to grow CD4s.

Oh believe me, we've had the occasional fight around here too over the years. :o

The difference between your hobby forum and here is that this place is primarily a support forum. For that reason, we have a code of conduct, just like many "real-life" support groups have in place.

Basically this code of conduct says - you can disagree with what someone else says, but don't use personal attacks to get your point across. No name-calling, no racism, no sexism, no sexuality-phobia. No threats. Most people realise why we have these rules in place and abide by them. :)

Hugs,
Ann

Slow and steady wins the race...

Isentress and Truvada is good stuff, has been shown to be very effective and have a good CD4 rise.

I just keep thinking,  I need to give time to let my body heal.
