Condom broke twice while having anal sex
« on: May 29, 2017, 08:55:06 am »
Good afternoon,

I am writing from England. I am a bisexual man and earlier today, I had protected anal sex with a man where I was the insertive (top) individual, the first time the condom broke it must have been less than 40 seconds before I realized and pulled out, changed the condom and continued sex, the second time it broke it must be around 30- 40 seconds as well.  I have no idea of the other parties sexual health background other than what they informed me (which was that they are "clean") . There was no unprotected ejaculation when the condom broke and I have no known or visible cuts on my penis.

Should I ask for PEP at the hospital when I go now? I understand I have a 72 hour window to ask for a PEP. I am worried but I am also calm as I do not want to overreact to this current situation. Could you please advice me on what I should do? Also could you share or provide information on the risk of contracting HIV+due to condom failures. I thank you for your assistance in advance.

We'll I am clean and I am living with HIV. I wash you know.

You had a risk and its that simple.
If you concerned and want to take the PEP start the course as soon as possible no more than 72 hours post exposure.

Test 6 & 13 weeks post finishing the course for a conclusive result. Use condoms designed for anal and condom safe lube going forward. Test yealry at least as routine.

Thank you for your reply Jim. Could you please advise on what I should say to get the PEP? And should I get it immediately at the A&E department (its a public holiday in England today) or should I wait to get it from the sexual health clinic tomorrow? And will PEP help eliminate any HIV issue. I would be grateful for any help.

Tell them the truth.

Unprotected intercourse twice due to condom failure. Ask them for PEP as its within the time-frame of 72 hours if they give it to you or not is up to them. If you ask for it or not is up to you, if you wait its up to you as well.

All I can say is if you want PEP its your decision to apply for it, do start as soon as possible.

Jim
