Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

worried about my poor oral health

Hi all,
I am just wondering what the experts and others thoughts are on my situation.
5 weeks ago I gave head to an unknown gay man at a bathhouse. he ejaculated unexpectedly in my mouth. I spat it out but the next day I realised I had a large sore/ulcer on the inside of my cheek. the sore was quite painful the next day which is why I noticed it. 6 days later I developed a post nasal drip and felt like i was getting a cold. 2 days after this my tonsils swelled up and were sore for bout 6 days. about a week after they got better I had some mild tenderness in my underarms and groin lymph nodes. there is no swelling in any nodes just a mild pain that comes and goes. Am i experiencing seroconversion illness? I have read that it takes 2 weeks to develop symptoms and that usually a fever or rash develop? I would greatly appreciate any advice on this! thanks

You were never at risk of contracting HIV ulcer or not.

thanks for your advice Rod it is very relieving but I am finding it hard to stop my worry  :( this sore was quite large and definately a break in the skin. I know im probably just being paranoid but I keep getting told that cuts and open sores in the mouth case the risk of infection to become high?

Oral sex is not a risk and saliva has over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that inhibit HIV transmission.

Despite occasional reports of infection via giving oral, they never seem to hold up under careful scientific scrutiny.

Through longterm studies of sero-dystonic couples the results are clear that not a single sero-negative partner has become infected although there has been a great deal of mutual oral and consistent use of condoms for vaginal/anal intercourse.

As to your symptoms, there is nothing in any way HIV specific about any of them. You should be discussing them with your doctor if they persist. Also, ARS does not occur sequentially. If symptoms of seroconversion are going to happen they show up all at once and then are gone after a week or two.

From the tone of what you have written I suspect you aren't going to believe anything other than a negative test result. So for your peace of mind you can test if you must at 13 weeks and collect the inevitable negative result.
