The Power of Luck (and antiretrovirals)
« on: November 01, 2013, 06:24:22 pm »
I got my new numbers back, and despite doing absolutely everything wrong except taking my pills (mostly) consistently, my t-cells jumped back above 1100 and I remain undetectable. I eat terribly if at all, I don't exercise beyond walking 5-12 miles a day and I sleep when convenient. On the plus side, I have zero stress and a general laissez faire attitude toward life, the universe, and well...

I take this as further evidence that living OK with HIV is a combination of luck and adherence to HAART. So, good luck and happy pills to you.

Should my numbers drop, I'll meet you here to whine about how "I did everything right" and "how could this happen to me". I'd better bookmark this page.

Great news!  I think the non-stress issue is big, when I would think you would have tons of stress.  All the best and keep doing everything wrong...lol.

Oh, 5-12 miles walking a day is awesome exercise.  I maybe walk 10 feet.  Ok, kidding, but probably only like 2 miles total.  Maybe not even that.

Mitch, hello! I haven't been reading too many threads here lately. I hope you're doing alright in general...

Ted, yeah it's NYC's fault. I live on the East Side, and everything I need is on the West Side, so I end up walking over a mile just to get to the doctor or what have you. (I only know how much I walk because I have one of those pedometer apps constantly running on my phone.) Living in a car-unfriendly city has definite perks. ;)

Oh, and stress, yeah, I think that's the biggest detriment to most people's health. That and diet. I live on tiramisu and dried fruit, which apparently combine into some sort of t-cell elixir.

Well, this is a weird coincidence. I'm trying to catch up on a Coursera epidemiology (lite) course that I've been listening to. One of the presenters just made this quote:

"...research shows that some stress hormones accelerate HIV1 replication by as much as 11-fold in particular blood cells"
