Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

High risk and false negs

Hi there,
I had a high risk exposure last September (unprotected anal, I was receptive). 14 days later, I developed a slight fever, was tired, sore muscles, little appetite and felt like this for 7-10 days. About 2 weeks later, I had a small rash on both elbows. I was extremely stressed throughout this time as I was sure I must be seroconverting.
I waited till 60 days after the exposure to test. I have tested using oraquick oral swabs every two weeks since (from2 months till 5 months after exposure).
The tests were all negative.
I took my first blood test at the clinic yesterday and the rapid test was 'not ok' as the nurse said. It is therefore sent for further testing.
I am very scared as you can imagine. Is it possible I could  have had 10 false negative results from the oraquick test? Surely I was have had antibodies if I really had been seroconverting 2 weeks after the exposure.
I am grateful for any advice.

The only way that you are positive is that you had another exposure if not you had a false positive which if you did would be sent in to confirm.

Thank you very much for your reply. Just worried that the blood test is proving more reliable than the oral swabs.

I agree with Rod. You have amply and reliably tested negative for HIV. You ARE HIV negative. Period.

You can avoid this kind of very risky incident in the future by always making sure condoms are used everytime for anal intercourse. No exceptions. Have all the sex you want to with whomever you want to. But do it the safer way. That means always making sure the insertive partner is wearing a condom for anal intercourse. No exceptions.

Remember, the pleasure of unprotected anal is fleeting, but HIV is forever.

Thanks and yes, your advice re using condoms is very correct. Having sex without is stupid. My mistake. But one and only is all I can say. The anxiety and stress of the waiting, together with the possibility of a positive result, is not worth the fleeting fun by any means.
