Positive Pregnancy Planning - Do's & Don'ts?
« on: June 02, 2011, 10:08:51 am »
My partner and I have made the decision to have a child.  ;D  Some of you know me… I’m the positive partner in this magnetic relationship.  I will be the one to carry the child, (the first child anyway... what if I have twins!?  :o).  I have read through a few posts regarding pregnancy and healthy children born to positive parents.  I’m excited for this venture.  Yesterday I had my blood drawn for my next appointment, this is the plan we've made…

Look into Supplemental Health Insurance (CHECK my partner’s new employer offers Partner Benefits).
Schedule appointment with gynecologist for pre-pregnancy exam (CHECK - July 29th).
Blood Work (Cd4, Viral Load & Thyroid Level) (COMPLETE 6/1/2011).
Schedule appointment w/ ID Doctor for pre-pregnancy consultation (CHECK - June 6th).
Schedule appointment w/ High Risk pregnancy center for pre-pregnancy consultation (CHECK - July 29th).
Schedule appointment w/ Lawyer for legal direction (NOT DONE).
Print tentative ovulation calendar for donor & partner (IN PROCESS - WILL DO TODAY!).
Schedule tentative artificial insemination (CHECK - September).

I’m interested in hearing the do’s and don’ts…  Meds that I can talk to my doctor about, vitamins, types of support, etc.

Currently I am taking Truvada & Isentress (I’ve researched that they are not good to take while pregnant), so I’m looking at a medication change and a bit apprehensive about it…  But obviously, that’s up to my doctor.

Anticipating your response…

I also keep a blog journaling the journey... if you're interested.  Thanks!

Hi Amanda!

I have had 2 pregnancies and 4 kids since becoming poz in 94.  I honestly, can not remember what meds I was on for both pregnancies. I was lucky enough to have a Women and Infant Transmissions study going on in the city I was living in and felt confident in the docs recommendations.
I do remember that I just took the prenatal vitamin that they prescribed for everyone.
Eat well.
Get lots of rest.
Try not to worry and stress yourself out.
Good luck, I hope everything goes smoothly for you and your partner. ;D

Congrats on starting your baby making journey!   :)

I took Combivir, Reyataz and Norvir because my doc said that these drugs had been around a long time and were pretty much guaranteed as safe.  I also had been on Isentress and Truvada.  My doc also gave me the option of staying on those and thought that these drugs are  *probably* safe, but there is so little data on them to really make any guarantees.  If you want to switch, you might want to do it before you get pregnant just to be sure that the drugs agree with you.

Once you're undetectable and have your medication in place, everything else is just the same as any other pregnancy except you'll be given AZT during labor and the baby will get it shortly after birth.  You might have to keep reminding your ob/gyns of that from time to time.  Good luck.

I had my appointment and everything went well.. my Cd4 count was 764 and my VL was undetectable.

I'm not changing meds yet, but the plan will be about two weeks before starting the pregnancy process, I will switch to Combivir & Kaletra.  Once the pregnancy is over I will switch back to Truvada & Issentress.

Have a prescription for pre-natal vitamins.... here we go.  :)
