Probiotics
« on: April 27, 2007, 10:05:33 pm »
Hi everyone,

had an interesting exchange with my doctor regarding pro-biotics:

He says a large proportion of pro-biotics taken as supplements never make it past the stomach (because of the digestive process that kills them) then, for those that made it through, they last an average of 15 minutes in the intestine...

He thinks it is a waste of money and prefers a combination of what he calls pre biotics, i.e. plants that will encourage the bacteria that is already in the gut to reproduce faster. For this I get from him a compound (sold in Italy) of Cichorium intybus L. (Cicoria), Dahlia (Dalia), Sunflower, Ginkgo and pectin. The pectin helps in case of Diarrhea. Other than that he says that a good organic yogurt is a good, cheaper source of pro biotics that at least you get to enjoy eating.

Hope this helps

Thats probably true. I have only tried the supplement pro- biotics once. I do however eat yogurt almost daily, along with Danactive daily. I believe it is working for me.

Here some interesting articles :

I use Jarrow Pro-biotics that have a formulation that, as they claim, survives stomach acid to then "flower" in the intestines.

A Doctor I think highly of, Jon Kaiser have also made recommendations on this, but also acknowledge and encourages fresh yogurts, even recommend making your own to maximize the bacterial load.

I like yogurt, but don't make my own, and i like taking probiotics in a pill. I hope Jarrow's claims are legit! At least Newyorkbuyersclub.org does carry these, which I hope legitimizes the choice.

I eat yogurt. i prefer stonyfield or activa. I can tell the difference in how  they effect my digestive tract compared to other types. I was eatting yogurt long before HIV. I am 45....past 40 bowel movements become the focus of all our lives ::). I personally think most other yogurt is pudding with a dab of live culture to get the seal. The ingredients read to much like a pack of jello for my taste.
