Jogging on meds over 30?
« on: June 23, 2008, 02:15:07 am »
Hello everybody,

It's been awhile since I last wrote here. I seem to have gotten a bit fat and weighing in at over 83 Kilo Have decided it is time to do something about it. I started jogging in a park near my house and it feels great, my numbers are stable with zero viral load. The only thing I am a bit worried about is my legs. They are the only part of my body with absolutely no fat whatsoever. I can not afford them to get even skinnier or worse yet to burn the little muscle that 'I have there. Does anybody have any suggestions, specially lypo-related regarding jogging, meds and all together percent fat reduction?

I would like to add, with the daily jogging I feel almost as good as at 21 when I was in the U.S. Army.

Thankyou in advance for your comments and or suggestions.

Hello,

I don't jog. At 56, I don't need to possibly cause damage to my knees, or other joints, But I do try take a speed walk daily, of about a mile. If  I can't do it daily, I at least will do it 3 day a week. That I can handle, and I believe it helps to keep me in somewhat decent shape. I don't like staying still for any length of time, got to keep moving I say !! Plus I feel good afterwords !

I don't jog (yuck!), but I do my stair stepper in the comfort of my home five days a week.  Currently, I do it for 30 minutes; I'm thinking I need to up that to 40, as I need to lose a few more lbs.  I don't think my screwed-up lungs can handle anything more strenuous than stair-stepping.

I trail jog about three times a week, which is better for your joints than running on concrete. You say you have gotten a bit fat but worry about the lipo in your legs, well don't worry. With exercise there is no such thing as spot fat reduction, meaning when you exercise and lose fat you lose it from all over your body. You don't lose fat just in your legs by running just like you don't lose fat just in you abdomen by doing sit-ups. With lipoatrophy it is important to keep your weight under control because your body is not going to store fat under your skin. The extra fat is going to accumulate around your internal organs, which is more harmful than subcutaneous fat. That is why some people with lipo have a distented abdomen. Another benefit to jogging is that if you make your legs more muscular the veins in your legs will look more like you are athletic and less like you have lipoatrophy.

The only negative I know of regarding HIV and jogging would be if you are going on very long runs, like 20 miles. I have read that extreme cardio, such as competing in a marathon, can temporarily suppress your immune response. If you have a low CD4 that may be something to consider.

I think GSOgymrat gave the most informative response and I have no direct guidance other to state that I think jogging is America's most accepted yet dangerous cult whose sole intent is to kill its followers.

Just look at any one of it's members who NEED to go running in the middle of a heat wave for proof.

I ride the stationary bike 3 times a week, and do sit ups (a lot), along with a change in diet.  I have lost 50lbs since January.  I need to get motivated, still have another 25 to go..    D

My legs and ass are too much like a stick figure as the result of a decade of lipoatrophy.  I can't run or even sit on a stationary bicycle seat for more than 5 seconds.

I still worked out for about the first 4 years of this lipo period, until I tore a ligament in my left thigh so bad that I was on crutches for a month.  These days even sitting on a subway seat that has no padding is asking a lot of me.

I cycle. It is my cardio workout.

I have been lazy this summer and now my doc is raising too many red flags to start again at this moment.

But I will. Keep uip the good work.

I use the elliptical machine at least three times a week..combined with one hour workouts with a professional trainer....keeps me overall from falling apart and the Lipo has already done just about all it can do  so any "firmness" I can get by regular exercise I count as a contribution to a little better body than just sitting at the TV....then on most days just after Breakfast I  get to walk for about 2 miles along the lake  and feed the ducks, geese and squirrels
the Lipo belly is still there I try to reduce but nothing seems to help.  There are no Golden Years...,that myth was long ago squelched

I do walk/run on my treadmill 6x a week ( in air conditioning of course..im not crazy).  It's something that I really have to doin order to keep weight off as I have gone from 214 to 185 just by the running.  In addition it is important to have really good cushioned shoes and I prefer the treadmill because it is MUCH better for the joints than concrete with out anything to trip over.  Sometimes I have someone hold a cheesecake just out of my reach if I want to run really far.  ;-)

I will occasionally jog my memory, but otherwise I'm too worn out from work for that sort of thing.

Lift weights with your legs (and continue to jog as well).  If you have thin legs, in about six months, you will be surprised at the difference in size.  You just have to be faithful to lifting three times/weekly and listen to your body.  If something hurts, stop and rest it until you can resume light resistance without pain.  The key is consistency.  It's a lifestyle... oh and don't use steroids because they'll make your legs really vascular... which is, for some, a side-effect of meds.
Also, all people on meds should be lifting because loss of bone density is a well documented side-effect of the meds.  It will come back to haunt you in your later years (if you make it that long).  Resistance training will help prevent bone density loss.

I don't jog but try to go walking and cycling. I also try and workout 3 to 4x week. I find exercise helps improve my mood. At first I hate going but once I'm there I am grateful. I find my workouts go a lot better if I get sleep. I can no longer skimp on sleep and workout like I used to.  I really think though that it is exercise more than anything that has kept me around. I don't always think positive and can get depressed a lot but exercise seems to help me bounce back. Even just walking. oh yea and also sunlight. I don't care how cold or warm it is if I can see a day with sunlight it is great!

Thank goodness that Betty added "at the computer!"   :-*

For a few years I have been dedicated to 30 minutes of moderate to heavy cardio on the elliptical three times a week, and over the past six months I've been doing 20 minutes of 3.8mph walking on the treadmill the other four days.  It all helps to make up for a multitude of dietary sins.... mmm, these Hershey Extra Dark singles with raspberry!.... but more importantly, it's improving my lung and heart function.

Proof was had in my late March cardiology stress test when I was hooked up to the monitor and put on the treadmill.  My resting heart rate was 55, like a well-trained distance runner.  Pushing me to a maximum heart rate near 160 was impossible.  Then, when I had surgery a week later the nurses marveled at how well oxygenated my blood was and how calm and even my pulse was.

I just got back from a great run:-)

After kilometer number 3 I was out of gas so I spent the following hour walking the rest of my route at a casual pace. Even that said, it sure was more fullfilling than watching T.V. or the gym.

I'm with redhotmuslbear.  The benefits I have had from walking/jogging on the treadmill have been tremendous.  I NEVER thought I would see my cholesterol at 157 and trigycerides at 150.  E V E R .  My tri's were in the 600 range 2 yrs ago and chol was 240.  The cardio can just do amazing things for your health.  Well of course in addition I only drink one glass of wine each evening and I eat right for the most part..but of course I give myself one "free" day a week where I make love to a buffet of food as my treat to myself.   ;)
