Title: HIV Medication same time Every Day
Post by: pinkadam on October 15, 2006, 08:04:12 pm
Hi Guys

I would like to know the opinion of the guys who have been on medication for a while.

Do we need to take the medication exactly the same time every day. Is there a window that we should stick to when you are on medication.
Iam on Truvada with food and Sustiva without food.
My doctor said to take each pill once a day but did not mention i should stick to exact time every day. I come across some doctors who seem to suggest to take the medication exactly at the same time.

I generally take Truvada afternoon but today i took it at 7.00Pm (7 Hours Late). Is this dangerous.
Does the situations like this cause drug resistance to drugs.

Thanks ahead
Tony

Tony: Dosing schedules are all about drug efficacy. You should ask your MD about this. Some drugs are very sensitive to timing, some less so. I have no info on your drugs (Many here can answer from experience).

Once a day means every 24 hours. Twice a day means every 12 hours.  The time is your business, but the timing involves your body and metabolism. Once a day, M,T,W, etc.,  doesn't mean take a drug 7 am Monday morning and then Tues at 6 pm. I sometimes laugh at the advice that if you are late with a dose (forgot, no drug, no water, no privacy, etc) to simply wait for the next. No, take the drug immediately, and adjust to the new dosing schedule. If you want to get back to another schedule say, because of this, or because you travel through a time change, then you may easily make a schedule that gradually moves the dosing towards one or another time (try making one hour difference daily). I have done this numerous times over the years. Be serious about it, and you will do pretty well. So, there are ways to deal with occasional late dosing. If you really dose "willy-nilly", your meds might actually fail, and all you get are the unwanted side effects that come with any powerful drugs.  8) -megasept

It is best to stick to regular time

However, with yr drugs is shouldn't matter to much, esp the Sustiva, esp as an occasional happening.  They stay in yr body a long time, longer than a day.  This is not a reason to be slack about it though.
