Title: Who invented the Cell Phone
Post by: denb45 on May 04, 2011, 09:49:19 am
Who invented the Cell Phone?

Ever wonder who invented the Cell Phone?

Ok, you are on a TV game show and have to answer  this question to win $10M. The question is, who invented the cellular phone?  In all probability most of us could not answer this question. Those of you who know are in that small minority.

The inventor of the Cellular phone is Henry Sampson, Jr. Sampson is an African-American from Jackson, Mississippi. He attended Morehouse and transferred to Purdue. He received an MS in Engineering from the University of California (Go Bears). He was awarded an MS in Nuclear Engineering from Illinois and his Ph.D. from Illinois. Sampson is the first African-American to receive a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering.

In 1971 Sampson was awarded a patent for the "gamma-electric cell."
This technology was used in the cellular phone.  Hopefully Dr. Sampson was well rewarded for his efforts.

Alright, now that you have this information join the "Tell a Brother Club" by passing this information on to more of us (Barbershops and Beauty Salons are great places to discuss this  info).
During the week let our Anglo brethren know about Dr. Sampson.  This is called the "Breakdown the stereotype campaign."

Thank you folks!

Wasn't the first cell call made in 1973?  I was surprised cable TV goes back to the 70's.  I guess it just didn't get to us until about 1984.

That is what he claims, but we all know that the US ARMY invented it, and we get whatever is left over, that's why the White house could shut-down the whole dam thing, if they wanted or needed to.....

Henry Sampson was a nuclear physicist.  He invented the gamma electric cell, which converts gamma rays emitted from nuclear reactions and converts them into electricity.  It has nothing to do with a cell phone / mobile phone. And I certainly hope there is no nuclear fusion or fission going on in my cell phone -- gamma rays are a form of ionizing radiation which is an extreme health hazard.

Not to take away anything from Mr. Sampson, who was a great physicist, and also has a great first name. :)

Cheers,

Henry

Gore was very instrumental in getting the internets started for the military.  The Right has made fun of him relentlessly.  Did Gore ever say he invented it?  I think he may have said he was very involved in it as a senator.

Quote
during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN's "Late Edition" program on 9 March 1999.  When asked to describe what distinguished him from his challenger for the Democratic presidential nomination, Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Gore replied (in part):

"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

Clearly, although Gore's phrasing might have been a bit clumsy (and perhaps self-serving), he was not claiming that he "invented" the Internet (in the sense of having designed or implemented it), but that he was responsible, in an economic and legislative sense, for fostering the development the technology that we now know as the Internet.
