The front page of the NY Times had a rather troubling article about the way health insurance companies are beginning to calculate drug co-pays based on where a specific drug falls in a hierarchy of cost tiers.  The big concern to me was the fact that for higher tier drugs, some companies are dropping their old co-pays in favor of calculating the co-pay as a percentage of the drug's retail price.

(I think there can be as many as five tiers with (1) being the most common, widely prescribed drugs and (5) being the least prescribed costliest drugs)

A change like this could be devastating to anybody taking one or more of the newer ARVs.  In my case, for example, Prezista, Selzentry, Isentress, Intelence, Truvada, Valcyte (not an ARV, but quite expensive).  Paying monthly co-pays for an array of drugs like that would financially devastate almost anybody.

The Times article used several cutting-edge cancer drugs as examples and didn't mention any ARVs.

Does anyone know how imminent the arrival of tier-based pricing might be, and whether it's likely that the available ARVs will land in the higher, more financially crippling tiers?

"when" did you say will the new system kick in???   It already has for us Medicare geezers and for you most likely when your insurance plan anniversary date come due. Thanks to Dashound for putting the artical up for all to read. It is the same artical I read and posted about yesterday, "generic drugs vs doughnut hole"  We need to start finding alternative ways to purchase our meds.  The online pharmacy's look the best.  Does anyone use them for HIV/MEDS ?  If so can you let us know who so we can feel secure using them as well.  There looks to be a good one called AIDSDRUGS www.aids-drugs-online.com...............Any suggestions?????
