Bactrim/Septra

Hi boys and girls

I was just wondering if anyone else has had the stomach churning feelings on bactrim that i am having at the moment? Ive been put on a low dose 1 x 480mg per day for the next 4 months and it has been about 2 weeks now since i started taking the low dose and things are not getting any better. The constant feeling that I'm going to be sick is stopping me doing day to day things although as yet i have not been physically sick. I've just started on meds Sustiva/Combivir so not sure if they are contributing to the feelings or not. If it continues i thought about contacting my doctor in the next few days but thought i would see if anyone on here has had similar experiences.

to answer, yes it could be the septrin, or the azt bit of the combivir, or possibly the sustiva. or all of the above combining to cause maximum ick-ness.

talk to your dr, he can prescribe anti-nausea meds, or possibly think about switching, depending on how things go. in the meantime, your local chemist should stock something called Buccastem(prochlorperazine), which is very good for sickness and nausea - check with dr/pharmacist first though.

Hey Paul.

I started out on Combivir/Sustiva and Bactrim and for several weeks I had constant diarhoea, nausea and vomiting.  I stopped the combivir (for Truvada) and ditched the Bactrim (for Pentamidine) and everything settled down.  Combivir and Bactrim also made my bone marrow crash and I got seriously anaemic and needed a blood transfusion.

Nasty stuff.

Many thanks Kate for the link, I'll be trying out some of the suggestions it gives, as for anti sickness meds Ive got some cyclizine at home which i kept from when i was in hospital and Ive tried Metoclopramide (Maxolon) but they were no good, had no effect. I've mostly held off from taking them as all i seem to do is take pills and tablets and i really want to take the minimum medication possible.

Cubbybear, I'm only on Combivir while i see if i I'm allergic to the Sustiva if i show no reaction then I'm being moved over to Kivexa (10 days from now) its interesting to hear about you becoming anaemic as last week when i went to see the doc about TB he said i was slightly anaemic, so i may have to keep an eye on that. I was on Pentamidine but the doctor wanted me back on Bactrim.

I think I'll stop moaning for the next 10 days, take Cyclizine every day and ask to be taken off Bactrim and put back on Pentamidine when i change over to Kivexa.

Hello Paul,

Make sure to bring this to your doctors attention. I was started on bactrim, along with Zithromax back in 2003. And had some difficulty with the Bactrim. There are alternatives. I would think thats its better to switch the anti-biotics at this point then go switching the meds, especially if the stomach problems are related to the bactrim. Some people can't tolerate bactrim. I was switched to Dapsone. Perhaps you can ask your doctor for another prescription, and give that a try.

i was allergic within 8 days with the most intense burns from the inside of my skin.

never been so ill, ever. had to go hosp and be on drips.  now i have once a month nebulizor of pentamidine.

but i still got PCP

i think the pills are better but they are kinda nasty (to me)

After a couple of weeks the feeling of nausea has gone which is such a relief, i think it was just a case of waiting till the worst passed. So my advice to anyone starting Bactrim/Seprta is to put up with the side effects for a few weeks to see is they subside (provided they are not serious side effects), having a great Doc is essential, mine gave me 2 weeks of work, and then offered me another 2 weeks if i wanted it ( i refused as really want to get back to work).
So at the minute, I'm a happy little bunny who returns to work on Monday

I suffered fever for one week when i was on Bactrim. Then my doc  switched mr to mepron which is very very expensive.I develped rashes all over my body and had high temp for 5 days. Funny thing things these symptoms started after i took Bactrim for two weeks.
It was a bad experience for me taking bactrim as i suffered Weight loss , nausea , fever and rashes all over my body.
