So is there a thread for the airport meeting/transportation to the hotel?

Waiting around the airport to meet up with other people whose planes may or not be arriving at their scheduled time strikes me as a waste of time. Just get on BART and be on your way to the hotel. Arrange to meet up at the hotel. Much better than hanging around the airport.

BART trains leave from SFO about every 20 minutes. The trip from SFO to the Powell Street station takes 30 minutes.  At the Powell Street station, take the exit marked Hallidie Plaza, and you're literally steps away from the front door of the hotel.

Although the official address of the hotel is 28 Cyril Magnin Street, the main entrance to the hotel is actually at 17 Powell Street. The entry is kind of non-descript. It's in the same building as the store Sephora. The Cyril Magnin address is the back entrance to the hotel, and it's for the benefit of taxis and delivery trucks, since the first block of Powell Street is closed to vehicles other than cable cars.

At least this year arriving at the airport will be nothing like it was when we had to go through customs in Montreal.

Landed in Montreal and took over an hour to get through customs, and the people oh my god were so fucking rude. And poor Alanbama lost his luggage and that was another hour wait. Landed at 5:04pm got at the hotel at 7:30PM.

Hi Rich,

Thank you for the offer.  I will probably get a car service or taxi when I arrive.  After traveling for 11 hours, I expect to be sick and tired of planes and airports by the time I arrive.

Updated Arrival Info

Amtrak will be getting me to San Jose at 8:30 p.m. on the 13th, so I will most likely not arrive at the hotel until after 10:00 pm.

Although I can understand that someone flying in from the U.K. would be reluctant to take BART to the hotel, BART is actually especially easy for those arriving at the International Terminal. The BART station is directly connected to the International Terminal, so you don't even have to take the five-minute ride on the "AirTrain" to get to BART. If traffic is bad (which it often is), BART may actually be faster than a taxi. SFO is the first stop on the BART line, so you're guaranteed your choice of seats and won't have to fight crowds. The BART trains depart every 15 minutes; the destination sign on the platform will say "Dublin/Pleasanton."

A taxi will cost about $45 and perhaps $50 if you get caught in traffic. Take BART! It costs just $5.15, and the hotel is just a 30-second walk from the Powell Street BART station. Use the money you save to treat yourself or a newfound friend to a nice dinner.

By the way, those door-to-door shuttles (like SuperShuttle) that hang around outside the terminal are a big pain. They're cheaper than a taxi, but you have to wait around until they fill up the van, and they could wind up running all over town dropping off other passengers before they get you to the hotel.

Rich's offer to give people a ride from the airport is generous, but I wouldn't recommend waiting around very long to take advantage of such a ride. You could make it to the hotel in the time you'd still be waiting at the airport for the ride. San Francisco is a big tourist town, and the natives are very friendly. You can be sure that in the highly unlikely event you get lost, someone will be glad to help you out.

I've traveled a lot in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. I can't think of any airport where it's easier to get to downtown than by BART in San Francisco.

This is my fourth or fifth post on this subject. Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but I just hate to see people wasting their money on a cab when BART is so easy.
